how do second semester grades count?

The Academic Advising office here told me that they dont do midterm grade reports for transfers. So, that being the case, how does everyone talk about doing better in this current semester actually helping them in the transfer process when the transfer schools will never see the grades (assuming you are applying for fall '07 transfer)? This has always been very confusing to me. Is it bad that we dont send out midterm reports?

Most schools will have a form in their application that you must submit for mid-term grades.

Basically you have to go around to all your professors and get them to write down the grade you would be getting now along with their signature.

I dont see that form with any of my applications..is there one on the common app?

i believe there was one on the common app

What schools are you looking at applying to.

Chicago and Notre Dame are the non-common app ones, as well as SUNY Stony Brook, and I dont believe there is one of these forms on the SUNY app.

Stony Brook doesn't look at mid-term college grades; we wait until your semester is complete.

Stony Brook University

If a school requests them, then they obviously count for something. But I would reccomend sending them in either way, if they are good. Good grades can't hurt!

Oh, and by the way, if a school doesn't request them, draw up your own form. Take a school like Oberlin, that does request them, and adapt it on your computer (DL adobe acrobat or something similar). That's what I did and I think it helped since I had a 3.64 at 1st semester but a 4.0 at midterm 2nd semester

yeah I did the same one for the school I'm at now. I had a 4.0 second semester after a 3.55 first semester so I figure submitting my own helped.

where are you know, boston, and where did you come from? I'm at brown and came from tulane

They count in two ways:

(1) For the schools which request them, they will be part of the admissions review process and a factor in whether you are accepted. Some have you self report your "estimated" mid-term grade. Some require prof initials on a form. I don't know any which expect your Registrar to send them.

(2) Even if a school doesn't require a mid-term estimate or report, the school(s) which accept you and where you decide to go, will want to see your final transcript. They won't want to see significant downturn from the first-term grades/mid-term estimate you submitted with your app.

I agree with posters who say that, if your mid-term estimates enhance your app, why not send them even if the school doesn't require it.

so the question is if the school doesnt have a form for mid-semester grades, do I have the prof sign sometihng with a school letter head, or should they just write it on a regular piece of paper?

I'm just making my own form basically, and having each prof. write the grade, sign, and date it. The school doesnt require it, but I figure it can't hurt since I have higher grades overall with more credits.

I reccomend taking a pretty pre made form from a school that requires it and adapting it!

I am kunfuzed as to what a college does after they accept you. For instance, if you are applying for the Fall 2007 semester, you should have submitted your Fall 2006 grades. Ok now consider that they evaluated your transcript and you have been admitted, but you will still need to send in your spring 07 transcript. Now what happens if say you do not perform good the second semester...can they take your acceptance away?

Yes. If they accept you with a 3.5 and they suddenly see you got a 2.5, they can very quickly say "never mind". Your acceptance is based on the continuation of good grades, and they don't concrete it until you send in final spring grades.

I'll probably turn my grades in after spring break (aka after my tests)

I'm kinda scared because while I have mostly good grades (A's and A-), I have a C+ in Calculus II...

gg on last test, highest grade was a B-... no curve...

dang, that's insane

Cvjn - will there be a curve for the final grades in that course?

If so: ask the prof if he can initial a mid-term estimate which reflects what your eventual curved grade might be.

If not: I think you might want to note on the mid-term estimate form that B- was the highest grade in the class.

Good luck.
