How do the placement exams work?

I am thoroughly confused with them. As far as AP exams go, I got a 5 on Chemistry and a 4 on Calculus BC. So, that means I have received credit for one full year of Chemistry and two credits of Calculus. I called and the guy said that I don't have to take the Chemistry placement exam due to my AP score, but I still have to take the math exam. Later that week, I called and asked and someone else told me that I don't have to take either exam. Whether or not that is because of my AP score, I don't know.

So, I guess my questions are: Do I have to take either exam, and if I do, which, or both? If I perform poorly, what happens? Should I just jump into the higher level classes, and risk being lost due to unlearned material, or should I just start with the regular classes, and "risk" relearning material. Is there any downside to taking the intro and regular level classes. I know that with the credits I've earned, I can graduate one quarter early.

Thanks for the help.

You don’t have to take the exam, but I think it’s suggested that you take the Chemistry placement exam. If you do poorly, nothing happens. You still jump to the higher level and don’t have to start from basics again. You can only use 2 APs for fulfilling distribution requirements, though. I’m using my Chem and Calc BC credits for distribution and starting from Econ 201. Since I already know the material, hopefully, the class will be somewhat easier for me. :] But anyway… I hope my answers helped!

does it depend on the subject for you to be exempt from taking a placement exam? is there anywhere on the website where we can figure this out?

The following link shows you the available exams for certain subjects: [Before you Arrive: Academic Placement, Orientation and Parent Programs, Student Affairs, Northwestern University](Student Transition Experiences - Northwestern University)

If you’re starting from the lowest level of any of the subjects on the link, you do not need to take a placement exam. However, if you are not going to or planning to do so, then you should/need to take it. Please correct me if I’m wrong wrong.

I’m not sure if this is solely a Weinberg requirement but I received an email stating regardless of your AP scores, you must take the chem placement exam. However, if your AP scores are sufficient enough to earn you credit, as stated above, a poor score on the placement exam will not trump your AP score and you will still be able to skip to a higher class level

what if you’re not planning on taking chemistry, though?

What happens if you just plan to use your AP Chem credit to fill one of the two distribution requirements for science but do not plan on taking additional Chem courses?

if you are not taking chemistry then don’t worry about it
