I'm curious as to how the UCs (particularly Berkeley) view taking a semester off, granted that you can still transfer out in two years. I'd like to know for: a.) personal unexpected occurrence (death in the family, etc.); and b.) just to work.

Thanks.

i think they just ask to see if you have any grades at different schools which you didnt mention bec you possibly didnt do well

I took a semester off in community college. The application will ask you to explain this absence. I don't think its a big deal because I still got into Berkeley and everywhere else I applied. I just stated some personal reasons, don't stress over it.

in your application, do you have to mention why you have taken summers off? or are they directly implying fall/spring??

Summers and winters are completely optional, so I highly doubt you have to explain it in your application. Personally, I'm leaning towards tacking on more units in the fall, spring, and winter, so that I can spend my summer working or doing an internship.
