I am currently looking into colleges that have strong linguistics programs. I am also interested in programs that have overlaps with neuroscience and offer good language courses. How do the follow colleges differ in terms of strength of/focus on linguistics? Which college would you recommend?

Penn: strong linguistics program, but I hear theres more of a focus on sociolinguistics
Stanford: one of the top linguistics program in the country, but thats all I know
U Chicago: I hear the linguistics program is strong, but again, no further details
UCLA: offers neurolinguistics

I'd appreciate your help!

Anyone, pretty please?

You really can't go wrong with any of the schools on your list. In order of preference, I'd say:

MIT (not on your list???)
Stanford
UCLA
Penn
Chicago

Penn's program is focused on sociolinguistics, and it has close ties with the anthropology program. Chicago's program is also very good, but they don't really have a neuroscience focus. They do require a non-Indo-European language, though, which is pretty unique. I don't know much about Stanford and UCLA's programs, but I do know they are very, very good. MIT might be an excellent choice. It has a very strong (if not the best) linguistics program, and it has a cognitive science focus.

I do know that MIT has a strong linguistics program, but the fact that MIT is a school generally focused on math and science turns me off. I think I'd suffocate in that environment. But thanks a lot for the comment, warblersule -- it really helps.
