I really screwed up my chances of going to any college as first year from bullying, depression, being homeless, and other crap. I was thinking of working my ass off at a community college, taking SAT subjects tests and retaking the ACT.

How will these colleges feel about a transfer student, what grades and kind ECs are they looking, and which of these are gay-friendly? Any suggestion for other liberal art colleges will be helpful too. I am a guy btw.

Vassar College

Every single one of those admits transfer students. Whether or not you could be one of the transfers they admit is another thing.

In order to optimize your chances for transfer, you need to get the very best GPA that you can. Make an appointment with the Transfer Advisor at your closest community college, and talk about the best way to get to where you want to be.

For good information about the whole transfer process, spen some time in the Transfer Forum. You can find it by going to the main page where all of the forums are listed, and then scrolling down.

Good luck!

In transfer admissions, colleges (at least those I’m familiar with) DISCOURAGE retaking any standardized tests AND DISCOURAGE taking another standardized test. They want your test scores from high school, assuming you haven’t been out of school for many years. Retaking any test or taking another test gives you an unfair advantage compared to other students who did not retake these tests, thus they DO NOT want you taking these tests.

That said, if you’re transferring as a junior (meaning you will enter your transfer school as a junior) your ACT/SAT scores will not be needed.

The problem with small colleges is that they often have high retention rates and rarely have more than a handful of spots open. Below is the admit rate from last year and the average admit rate over the past five years for each of your colleges.

Swat - average 16.5% (~15/~93), last year 12.2% (12/98)
Vassar - average 13.7% (~12/~86), last year 19.3% (16/83)
Brown - average 10.0% (~55/~553), last year 12.1% (94/774)
Amherst - average 7.68% (13/~169), last year 5.31% (12/226)
Dartmouth - average 5.64% (~21/~365), last year 3.70% (18/486)

Many colleges have limited funds and accept very few transfer applicants who have financial need; Brown and Vassar fall into this category. Wealthier schools do better - I believe Swat, Amherst, and Dartmouth are need-blind for transfers. The good news is that admitted transfers usually get decent financial aid.

Financial aid raises the question of eligibility. If you are no longer living with your parents (i.e. if you were homeless because you were kicked out), you MUST figure out whether colleges will consider you an independent student. Even if you are independently living on your own, colleges may consider you a dependent of your parents, which would affect how much financial aid they would give you.

I recommend looking into the various LGBT scholarships available. The Point Foundation is the largest and most notable, but there are others.
