My son's high school has one counselor for every 500 kids or so. DS is a junior and his counselor is new to the school district this year. I just read a "Counselor Recommendation Form" for a school's honors program. It asks for typical objective info like class rank, but also for subjective answers, including whether she would recommend the student for the program.

The possibility that a counselor would get to know even 50 of her 500 kids in a year well enough to recommend or not recommend for a specific school is slim.

Do counselors just look at a kid's record (no suspensions, etc.) and recommend, even if she has no idea who he is? I've heard high school kids being told "get to know your counselor so she will fill out a good recommendation for you." Seems impossible to me for most students.
