How do they know if you have your pre-reqs done?

This is probably a stupid question, but if one is submitting their applications in the fall of their sophomore year of college, how do the UC schools know if you actually have all your pre-reqs and GEs done by the time they accept you or deny you?

Your transcript indicate classes you have completed and you list the courses you are currently enrolled in that fall semester.
They strongly suggest that all your required perquisites be completed by the end of the fall semester(in your case, your sophomore year) you are applying for transfer.
It would be devastating if you got accepted for transfer but failed to complete the required classes and get your offer rescinded.

On your application, you list the classes you have in progress during the Fall semester. Early in the year (Feb), you have to submit an additional application update that reflects the grades you received in your Fall classes and the list of classes you are taking for Spring (& Winter) semester. They determine which classes will transfer and look at your completed IGETC, pre-reqs, and recommended classes to see how much you will have finished by the end of Spring semester. They expect you to pass all of your transferable Spring classes and admit/reject you based upon that assumption (sometimes with certain conditions you must follow Ex. All C’s in classes, Maintain GPA). You don’t send your transcripts until you are accepted and if you had lied about completing certain classes or if you had failed a class necessary for transfer, they often rescind your admission. But overall, as long as you fill out your Update, they will know what classes you are actually on track to finishing.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess the part that confuses me is that all the UC schools (and other schools I’m applying to) seem to have different requirements for GE classes and for majors. For example, it seems that Berkeley only requires the American Cultures and Writing requirements be met (which I’ve already met through SAT/AP scores)…yet on ASSIST, it says that you have to complete all the L&S requirements (including humanities, math, science, etc)…I don’t really understand exactly what I’m supposed to be completing. Is there anywhere that streamlines it in a clearer way than ASSIST?

You need to decide what specific major for which UC you will be applying for transfer.
Then go to your cc guidance counselor and ask specific questions if you can’t get the info from the UC websites.
Yes, it is confusing but getting it straight now in your head will help you focus on what needs to be done.
Thousands have done it successfully, so can you.
Good Luck.

You should complete the IGETC which will fulfill the general education requirements for almost every UC (depending on the school, they might require an extra class or two but you can take those when you’re there or worry about it closer to when you decide where you are definitely applying.) If you have a major like engineering or something related, the UCs recommend that you focus on fulfilling pre-reqs rather than General Education. The pre-reqs and recommended classes for your major do depend on which school you go to (Ex. One school might require you to take Calc 1 while another school might require you to take Calc 1 & 2 for the same exact major). If you let us know your major and which UCs you are looking at in particular, someone can better guide you with which classes to focus on.

You complete IGETC - Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum for your General Education classes. it’s accepted by all of the UCs and CSUs in order to make it easier for CC students transferring.

[ASSIST Help Pages](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

As for your major classes, use Assist to look up the prerequisites required by each of the UCs/CSUs that you’re interested in applying in. Often times, some prereqs will overlap, but schools ask for different things. For my major, most schools required a specific set of classes which I could take to fulfill for all of the campuses I was applying to, but others asked for several other courses that were exclusive to that school’s requirements.

If you’re a high unit major (like engineering) I THINK you just complete L&S reqs instead of IGETC since it’s fewer classes. But I’m not positive on that.

Thanks again for the replies. The thing is, I’ve been at UCLA this year and haven’t enrolled in a CC yet; I’ve completed a few GE’s, but those were specifically for UCLA’s GE program. So my situation is unfortunately a bit trickier, especially since I am interested in different majors at several different universities.

I also think that I should be able to be exempt from a lot of GE requirements, if most schools work the way UCLA does. At UCLA, I was exempt from the math and English composition requirements due to my SAT/AP scores. According to Berkeley’s website, I’ll also be exempt from their American Cultures requirement. So if I were to take IGETC, would I be taking a lot of classes I probably don’t need?

Oh, and my major (depending on the universities) will be American Studies, Media Studies, or Journalism.

I think you’ll get out of the English reqs regardless (I used AP scores too). But since you’re interested in going to a CC and then transferring I’m not sure how they count both. I know that if transfer from UC to UC they use UC Reprocity so whatever you do at the previous UC counts towards the new UC.

^Ah, does anyone know? Or should I…dun dun dun…start a new thread on it? :p

Another question: can you say on your application that you plan to take summer classes the summer before the fall you’re admitted to?

I’m having a difficult time getting into classes for this summer, but would they not even consider my application if I have 2 quarters at UCLA and a year (plus planned summer classes) at a CC?
