How do they know?

Several people have mentioned contacting professors and/or coaches with questions as a way to show interest thereby raising admissions chances. I was wondering how does the admissions office actually know students have done that? Is there like a system in place or something?

If the coach is interested in recruiting you, they will let admissions know. Otherwise the contact is of no value.

Firstly, many colleges pay no attention to “demonstrated interest”. So if you’re whole intent is to boost your admissions chances, you should check on that first – otherwise you’ll just end up being annoying.

Secondly, if you find a college where some interplay between faculty and admissions does have weight, be sure your questions aren’t shallow ones. Frankly, if they aren’t sincere concerns and questions you have, don’t ask 'em.

Lastly, for any boost to happen at all, you’ll have to be that singular memorable inquiring HS senior that broadly piques the professor’s interest – enough for him/her to mention at the faculty meeting or admissions consult. Are you that person?

Regardless, best of luck.
