I'm hoping for a fairly quick answer to this question! If my daughter enrolls in a BA theatre program this fall and then decides to re-audition next year for some BFA programs, will the BFA schools consider her a transfer since she'll have some college credits, or, a new student since she'll have to start over as a Freshman anyway? If anyone has an answer, I'd love to hear it! Thanks so much! This site has been a true life-saver during this entire college selection process!

For admissions purposes, your D will be considered a transfer applicant because she will have college credits since HS graduation. Some schools may allow her to enter with soph standing and others may make her start over as a freshman in the BFA program but in EITHER case, she will be considered a transfer APPLICANT and not a freshman applicant and the admissions odds will be more difficult.

Thanks soozievt, that’s what I thought after reading the boards over the last 2 years. I think she’s made a decision, but I’m not jinxing it by saying it out loud tonight LOL! We shall see what the morning brings…

Just a warning - that Q was asked at a very top notch BFA program while I was sitting there with prospective applicants, and they laughed and said, yes, you CAN audition again the following year, they did not say ‘BUT,’ however it was implied that unless you have significantly changed, you will most likely not get in the next year either. That said, I’d try new schools rather than re audition at the BFAs that turned you down this year. Throw the net out further.

If you’re daughter gets good training in her BA program, and possibly works with an acting coach outside of her college, she could definitely still be a contender for BFA programs if she decides to transfer. A lot can happen over a year, and I would not discourage her from applying to any schools, even the ones that she was previously rejected from. As a transfer who was rejected from all of my schools the first year I auditioned, nothing is impossible, and if she decides to transfer I wish her the best of luck!

True, I know of one who got skunked first time around and reauditioned the following year at BoCo and got accepted. I would ALSO still throw the net out further to include some new schools.

Oh yeah, I would definitely recommend applying to different schools as well, I also recommend applying to a lot of schools, and doing walk-ins, just to improve chances.

Does the same apply for bfa transfering to another bfa. I’m thinking that I may want to reaudition some places for next year, but will they look that I’m already in a bfa program and completely disqualify me?

many bfa programs will not “completely disqualify” you, but most will make you start over in their first year acting classes. So, it may take you an additional 4 years to graduate from the new school.
