how do u prove ur SHIP insurance

if u have one that is

on the gold card it says that it doesn't act as proof of SHIP insurance..

then what is?

[UHS Tang Center](How to use SHIP | University Health Services)

If you are using Tang, they have electronic records of your membership in SHIP. However, if you waive SHIP but keep the card, you can’t insist that they pay the bills because your card proves insurance - you have to be enrolled in good standing.

If you use facilities off campus, you will get a different card (Anthem Blue Cross) that is handed in when you visit those locations.

The disclaimer on the card is legalese. If you signed up, if you have records that the fees were paid, then you can back up your insured status. If they have a signed waiver from you, or you never paid the bill on CARS and are delinquent, or aren’t a Cal student, different matter.

wait what, not sure if i follow

so i need to go to the tang center and ask for a blue card so i can use it when i visit other clinics?

They should be mailing you a card.

Keep in mind that they have to refer you to other clinics first - SHIP is like an HMO, where your main care comes from Tang. They will decide when and where you get referred, to deal with specialties and procedures they don’t do right at Tang. You can’t just go to a different clinic without their prior authorization or you won’t be reimbursed.

The only exception is urgent care/emergency room visits, which don’t require prior authorization. They will issue the blue card for you to use if you are ever in that situation.

If you study abroad through the UC system, they provide additional insurance that allows you to get care while you are away.

The link in my prior post explains some of this. Call Tang or walk in if you need to learn more.
