How do uchicago students refer to themselves?

Hey guys,

I need a little help here, what are uchicago students called? and how do uchicago students call the college? university of chicago or uchicago or any other names?

thanks a lot!

Students are referred to as their numbered year (first years, second years, etc), only rarely as freshman or sophomores, and then only by people who don’t know the proper term. There’s no term for students as a collective-- we would never want to be called the “Maroons”, for example, except in sports situations (ha!)-- so “UChicago Students” suffices there. As for the school, it is referred to as the University of Chicago, UChicago, or U of C. U of Chicago is not a term we use (this is a term used frequently on this forum, but I’ve never heard anyone say it here), nor is Chicago U or University of C.

A few other terms-

“The College” which is where the undergrads hang out.

“GSB” if you’re talking to someone over 40 “Booth” otherwise. Either refers to the grad only business school, where many undergrads would love to take courses.

“UC” which refers to a public university system on the west coast, and whose initials sometimes get mixed up with U of C.

“UIC”, a source of great frustration and mistaken identity for many UofC students.

But to your question, I found that most commonly UofC undergrads call themselves “college students”

thanks guys! that was very specific and helpful !

newsmassdad: Surprisingly, even some students here have started referring to their alma maters as “UC”, which is a trend not terribly common when I entered the College in 2007. I don’t think the 3rd or 4th years like this. (I personally prefer UChicago. I think a great reason why people don’t know of UChicago in the city is that the newspapers all label us “U of C”.)

I wish the University would just change the name of the school once and for all. Maybe it’s just me, but when Chicago GSB turned into Booth, it seems that the business school got a big boost in prestige. I think the name “Booth” is now more prestigious than the name “University of Chicago,” sadly enough. I think that if an alumnus gives us a >$1 billion donation (which is not entirely impossible), we should name the school after them. That’s essentially what happened to the business school when we got a $300m donation from Booth, and even though initially everyone thought the name change was ridiculous, the name has really caught on.

Phuriku,

Maybe, when they say UC, some of the alums are just trying to capitalize on the fame of the better known university system on the west coast? :)

As a GSB alum, I did not graduate from Booth, even if it is more famous. Besides, that name reminds me of telephones and restaurants (as in “I’ll have a booth”…) too much. No one ever said “Give me a GSB”!

UofC students, first/second/third/fourth year at University of Chicago.
