How do unis look at the IB

Hey everyone,
I'm taking the IB and I'm taking a gap next year-->where I'm going to be working with this NGO in India. I take the IB and so next year i'll have my final exam grades. Does anyone know whether colleges weight the final IB grades more than the transcript grades or not?

Thanks a lot in advance :D

depends. UK/Indian/other int'l universities look only at IB scores. American universities will look at both, but transcript grades are more important.

Wow, working for an NGO in India.... that sounds AMAZING! I'd love to do work like that. What NGO are you working for?

they weigh them the same as AP grades in america. theyll ook at all of your grades and then at your predicated scores, since they don't get the final scores till august

Well I only took IB so it'd help me get into college. I always said I was not going to do IB, my school convinced me to do it, and apparently it has helped me and my friends get into good schools. For example, 2 of my friends applied to U of Miami with similar GPA and similar SAT scores. One of them is doing IB, the other one is not doing IB but has been a strong Model UN Vice President. The one doing IB got in, the other one rejected. People that have done IB from my school have gotten into UPenn and Notre Dame. Some colleges and universities even give sophomore standing depending on your IB score. So yes, apparently it is worth it.

Now I'm dead scared because exams start in 20 days and I haven't really studied :S.

American Unis look at both your IB predicted (and when the results are out, your final scores) along with your transcript. Your transcript is weighed more, though. Doing the IB Dilploma works towards your advantage and hopefully the predicted grades that your school sends out to these uni's are 38 or above. Most of the prestigious unis (the ivies, duke, northwestern, georgetown and such) give credit for a score of 5, 6 or 7...unlike the APs when they give credit usually for only a score of 4 or 5.

Middlebury, a top tier LAC only gives credit for people who get 36 and above with all 6's, at the least or ppl who get 6 and 7 above in Higher level if their total is below 36. 6 is their cutting off point.

At another, they give credit only for Higher Level exams of 5 and above. At other LAC's, you can get a whole year credit of getting a 30 or above. (Mind you, this last group isn't the top-tier LAC's most ppl are looking at. These are LAC's like Knox College or Juniata College.)

It's all highly individualized. I say the IB helps because it's the most challenging course a high school can offer, and that it prepares you for either the broad requirements of graduating a LAC and/or writing a thesis (at a LAC or uni). But yeah, the transcript counts for a lot.
