S is on CCM wait list, so if a spot opens will he then get an acceptance email? I'm sue all schools are different but for those of you that have been through this how does it work?

I’ve mostly heard about phone calls.

It varies by school. My son was waitlisted twice, and was accepted by one at the beginning of May. The best advice I read was to move forward and commit, mentally, to going with your first choice school that you have an acceptance from. The school that admitted him called. He turned down the acceptance as the waitlist school wasn’t his first choice.

Also, some schools ‘rank’ their waitlists, but some will tell you and some won’t. For instance, long ago, my oldest S was waitlisted at Purchase, but the letter at the time said something like, “Though we can’t offer you a spot right now it is highly likely that you will be offered a spot in the future.” He did get a call in June, but by then had committed to another school. Some schools - like Purchase at the time - admit the exact number they need then internally rank the students thereafter; so if an admitted student turns down an offer, they call #1 on their list, and so on. Other schools will accept more than they know they’ll admit, predicting the likelihood of acceptances based on past patterns (what most regular colleges will do).

It is very unlikely the college will tell you what it does internally if it hasn’t already.

But if you are very interested in a college, it never hurts for the student to email or phone and tell them so. Also if anything comes up - a new role, a new internship, whatever - update admissions.

Last year son was “priority waitlisted” at one school in March. He was notified by email and asked if he wanted to remain on the waitlist or be removed, so he asked to be removed, since it was not a top choice for him. He received an email in late May asking him if he was SURE he didn’t want the spot LOL. But it was not a highly competitive school like CCM, so obviously lots more flux in the waitlist.
I know your son loves CCM…but truthfully, the advice Ive seen on here over and over again is to go ahead and commit to the best school you’ve got an acceptance from by May 1 (since that’s the commit date). If something comes from CCM after May 1, then a re-think might be in order. Of course by the time there is waitlist movement at CCM, your son may be sold on another school. Like you read over and over again here on CC, it really does all work out the way it’s supposed to for your kid. :)

Last year my D was a First Alternate at Pace. We were told that that meant that she was the “alternate” for someone else of her “type,” and if that girl turned them down, my D was in. Apparently for every kid admitted there was an “alternate” and after that there was another waiting list (I guess in case both turned them down). The letter she got was not the typical rejection letter; quite the contrary, it was all full of congratulations!! Then…nothing. We did call them once to try to clarify how it worked, and we were told that we would have a DEFINITE answer by May 1, one way or other. But May 1 came and went and still…nothing. Bottom line, we never heard from them again!! Fortunately, my D decided around mid-May that even if they called her, she would stick with Montclair, where we had put down a deposit. I did a MAJOR happy dance that night. It was finally O-V-E-R!!!

CCM didn’t indicate a rank on the wait list email, it was exactly the same as the acceptance email I saw except the acceptance section was worded differently. He really loves Rider. He’s been all about CCM for years so I think he can’t believe he is even considering another school. I’m going to have him be a “student for a day” at Rider, he’ll get to spend the day there etc. He also really loved Otterbein so an acceptance from there will really screw him up lol I know…I wish everyone had these problems believe me.

@MTMajorCook At Chicago Unifieds, one of my D’s friends said his classmate was accepted at CCM and would be declining the acceptance to attend another school higher on his list that had also accepted him. :)

Regarding waitlists, it is different for each school, with widely varying timelines. @MTMajorCook, I’m sure your great research skills could help you figure out CCM’s timeline by delving through previous posts, but if I were in your position, my brain would be fried by now. The one point to consider is certain schools have a reputation that gains them quick acceptance or decline from offers to students. Of course, that is once a student knows where they stand with all their schools. I would say CCM is one of those that gets a timely reply from accepted students. When our youngest applied, he auditioned late in the season to School A that was compiling a wait list for the first time. Several boys had been offered acceptance before he even auditioned and he was waitlisted. In just several days, the school very kindly mentioned that his “type” had chosen CCM over their program and they now would be accepting our son. It meant a crazy couple of weeks, deciding about financial aid, other acceptances, visits, etc. Based on DoReMiMom’s post and other history throughout these threads, I would hope your son hears of any change rather quickly. Ironically, our youngest’s scenario was the exact opposite of his older brother’s situation. Our oldest was initially accepted at School A and waitlisted at School B (where the youngest was initially accepted.) In both instances when a waitlist situation occurred we had a sitdown immediately discussing all the what if’s so we wouldn’t be scrambling if status changed at the waitlist. Also, if the waitlist school was a preferred school, they sent a Thank You email for the notice and reiterated their interest in the school. Some folks/schools feel differently about this. When the waitlist status changed, School A actually texted our youngest and then had a phone conversation; School B called our oldest.

Finally, this is an important example of why every student, once he/she is confident about the final decision school, should notify that school and all remaining schools asap. Also, it’s great motivation to be sure the FAFSA, CSS Profile and other financial aid items are completed asap as this will likely weigh in everyone’s decision.

Although waitlists work differently at different schools, and some kids get off waitlists every year, the majority do not, and hence, the best advice is to focus on where you have an actual acceptance and plan to attend that school. If you get a call off the waitlist, consider it a bonus and make the decision then but it’s never a good idea to plan on it. It can only bring great disappointment if it doesn’t happen.

Gotcha, good advice!

However I agree you need to move forward and choose from your known acceptances by May However, I do know people who got in CCM off the wait list last year so it is possible. But always best to be happy with your for sure acceptances (and be pleasantly surprised if a spot off the wait list opens up) than to be disappointed if this year that does not happen. We will be sending good thoughts your way. Hope it works out the way he wants!
