How do waitlists work? Is there an obligation?

I guess my luck could be a lot worse, but at this point I’ve been waitlisted by Haverford, Georgetown, and Middlebury. I was accepted to Boston College with an Honors invite. I’m still waiting on Swarthmore, Bowdoin, Tufts, George Washington, Brown, and Dartmouth.
Since I’ve been waitlisted by 3 (and probably more soon) am I only allowed to accept one spot on one waitlist? If I am accepted from a school’s waitlist, do I HAVE to go there? In order of preference, I like Haverford, Midd, and Georgetown, but can I take spots on all 3 lists? I know it’s very unlikely that I will be let off any list, but I’d just like to know if I would be obligated to attend if I were to be accepted.

As I understand it you can remain on as many waitlists as you would like. If you are offered a spot from the waitlist you are not obligated to take it. Many others, though, have suggested that if you want a slim chance, as opposed to no chance, to get off of the wait list you should actively court the school. That includes telling them they are your top choice and you would go there for sure etc.
