How do walk-ins work at Unified's?

I am planning on auditioning for a few schools at NYC Unified's and I was wondering how the process of doing a "walk-in" works. Whether it be for Acting or Musical Theater?

Thanks in Advance!

Schools that allow walk-ins will usually have signs indicating so posted outside their rooms – you can check with the door monitor to schedule a walk-in time that’s convenient for you. Our experience at Chicago last year was that not every school offered walk-ins, but quite a lot of schools did.

Some schools will also ask for a cell phone number so that they can text or call you come time for your walk-in since you’ll probably be wandering

Every college at Unifieds typically has a sign in table. If you are interested in possibly doing a walk-in, you simply go by their table and ask. Some schools do and some don’t.

You will need to bring extra headshots/resumes

All of your recorded music cuts (16 bar, 32 bar, 1 minute, 2 minutes, etc.) so you have SOMETHING that fits with that school’s requirement.

Have dance clothes available (for girls, black and colored leotard AND pink and black tights should cover most all schools); also your dance shoes (always good to have jazz, ballet flats, and tap if you tap.)

Lastly, make sure you know your SAT/ACT scores. When Penn State asked for those on their application my D had no idea because performers aren’t focused on that; they are focused on song cuts and monologues! Thank goodness I knew them so I made a sheet for D for the next day’s auditions. She also had schools ask for her GPA and Class Rank, so just know your numbers!

After all that, any walk-ins will be a breeze! Good luck.

If there is a school for which you know you want to try a walk-in, be sure to check in at their desk first thing in the morning. They often only have a couple of walk-in slots open and they fill quickly. My D did several walk-ins at the LA Unifieds, but there was one she really wanted. She got there really early-before they even had their table set up- and when they arrived, talked to them. It turned out that they didn’t really have time for walk-ins, but since she was there before their first appointment, they took her right then. She ended up getting a dance call-back, and then was offered a spot in their program, which she ultimately accepted. Definitely bring any application material you can think of, as MrsDrz suggested-resumes, a copy of transcripts, test scores, etc. She had not applied to any of her walk-ins prior to auditioning. After the auditions, she was told to apply as soon as possible after she got home.

Make sure you go there first thing to sign up. Everyone does walk ins and there may not be a spot left for you if you go any later!

Schools I know that do walk-ins at Chicago:
Texas State
Penn State
Coastal Carolina
University of Oklahoma
University of Miami
Western Michigan
Northern Illinois
Utah
UArts
Webster
Hartt
Rider
Wisconsin

any one know about NYC Unifieds?

NYC Unifieds- my daughter did two walk-ins- Ohio Northern and Long Island University. No cost for either school. Ohio Northern, they had a sign-up that they were accepting walk-ins and for LIU- they had two students walking around to recruit. Ohio Northern was her first audition and it was great that she had a chance to do a “practice” one. They were very nice and very receptive. They have a great program, the school was just too small for what my daughter wanted- same for LIU. Anyway, my daughter had great experiences with both of those schools.

One caveat about thekindagirl’s list of schools that take walk-ins: Schools take walk-ins on a space available basis - schools with space vary from year to year. If there’s a school you know you want to audition for, schedule it ahead of time.

Agreed! There is only a limited number of slots available for every school. With CCU and many other programs, they schedule dance calls and callbacks throughout those three days in Chicago as well- it’s not enough time to see 30+ walk ins. Last year I know we squeezed quite a few in, but this year we have even more people signed up and have built in more time for callbacks to get to know people more in depth… so spots will be sparser than ever. I have to imagine it’s the same way with other schools!

Do schools that have gone to prescreens offer walk-ins? For example, I was under the impression that CCU, Texas State and Michigan require prescreens though they offered walk-ins last year. Just curious.

hopesmom - they MAY offer walk-ins to do a prescreen at Unifieds, IF they have space… BUT when theses schools are getting hundreds of prescreen applications for a small number of audition slots, you can not count on their having space for walk-in pre-screeners.

Each year this process evolves, so while we can tell you what happened in PAST couple years, that may be outdated information for THIS year…

As I said above, if you want to be sure to get a prescreen or callback audition slot for a specific program at Unifieds, schedule it ahead of time!!! (As in yesterday :)) Check each program to see if they still have space for prescreen auditions at Unifieds and get it scheduled today!!!

Enjoy the journey!!!

“December 3, 2012: we are currently in the grace period following the December 1st application deadline. If you want to apply, please do so quickly as the application will close in a matter of days. Be sure to submit the Common Application, the U-M Supplement, AND the videos described below.”

CCU does not require a video prescreen to be seen at Unifieds, only for our on campus auditions, although it is encouraged even for Chicago so we can see your work ahead of time.

Does anyone know if Penn State might offer walk-ins in NYC? I know they have in the past but I’m not sure since they now do pre-screens. My S already has too many great programs on his list but I thought Penn might be a good walk-in.

PSU has offered them in the past but be sure to get to the table 1st thing in the morning. My D did a walk-in with PSU and is now a senior in their MT program.

Because of the prescreens starting this year, I do not think that PSU will be taking walk ins. In the past, I have had one or two spots for the entire DAY (and that was only because of last minute cancellations!) and that was the only way I could take a walk in or two. I am the monitor at the NYC PSU auditions :)

I was the monitor for Boco from 2008 - 2011 and Boco only allowed walk ins IF you applied by the deadline.
