How do Yale Decisions Work?

I've heard two theories to how they work:

Applicants are eliminated through many levels, and the final "level" of elimination starts a week or so before December 15.

The first admissions officer summarizes the applicant's profile for the larger committee, which in one sitting, decides whether the applicant is accepted, deferred or denied. This occurs regularly between November 1 and December 15.

Also, does Yale decide on applicants before they receive fall term grades? Most high schools just ended their fall term, so if they don't, wouldn't it be a rush for Yale's Admissions Office to evaluate all applicants after they receive the grades?

The Yale decision process is mysterious and scary. O_O
But I can answer one thing for you. They’ll make a decision before they see fall grades, but if your fall grades don’t compare well with how they saw you, then they could rescind their congratulations.

^ This, however, it takes a HUGE drop for them to rescind your application.

What if your fall term grades are released about a week and a half before decisions are announced? Will wait for these grades to arrive or have they already made the decisions?

most likely they will have already made their decision

OK, so fall term grades don’t affect SCEA decisions.

Does anyone know about how Yale makes admissions decisions?

i have heard the second theory you posited before, so it’s quite likely.

Yeah, I’d have to guess the second theory.
It’s weird knowing people are reading over your… life.

not really your life, just whatever you chose to reveal :)

I like to think that it is a combination of your two theories…I think (mind you I am a simple student not an Adcom) that they weed out the no’s in the early rounds and then present the rest to a larger council who help them further minimize the possibilities

The Admission Committee eventually votes on each qualified applicant for admission. An unanimous vote is needed for this said applicant to be accepted. Otherwise, it goes into the deferred/reject pile.

^ Fantastic . . .

I heard a third theory that Yale pays College Confidential to release the names of its users. They then put all CC users in the admit pile.

^Oh ya I think that I have heard that one too lol

Haha I wish ccuser’s theory was true.

But if they do a combination of both, do fall term grades matter, if they are released a week and a half before December 15? When does the Admisson Committee vote for the final decision? I’m nervous because my fall grades aren’t as good as they can be…

If your surname has three or more consonants–rejected.
If you name has two or more vowels–rejected.

If neither condition 1 or 2 hold–deferred.

The only grades that matter are those that were sent to them in the secondary school report. Worry as you might (and worry as we all might, myself included), there’s nothing you can do now but pray and keep your fingers crossed. I know I’m crossing my fingers and praying with every last breath.

I’ve heard that it’s the second theory and that there is an unanimous vote which scares me so much. Does anyone know how large the committee is?

I heard that the committee varies on the day, but always consists of the regional reader, the Director/Dean of Admissions and several faculty and students.

Oh gosh, not a unanimous vote… that’s scary. But I’m sure they deliberate together, so I doubt there’s ever an applicant with just one “nay” or one “yea.”

“several”?
