I am amazed and flabergasted by the number of students claiming to go to a top school in their State. I'm most amazed about the ones who claim top CA high schools (my state), because our scores pale in comparison to the rest of the Country. Who is telling you the school is great and at the top?

^Yeah... A lot of people say they go to great public schools, so I looked mine up at newsweek. I believe mine is place at about 1024. Not necessarily a "top" school...

Our school isn't a top school based on the Newsweek (we aren't like forced into AP classes; we don't offer billions of them, just the basics). You know when you go to a top school. People snicker when you tell them what school you go to here. You know when you go to a top school when you're a little embarassed (blush) when you say your school name, hoping not to be thought of as an elitist. You know you go to a top school when nothing surprises you on the PA system, i.e., someone got 1st Grand Prize for Science Fair while they said the many people that went to Latin Nationals.

Newsweek calls schools where people take 2.3 APs "top". Silly at best.

im not lying tho..i go to one of the best private schools in D.c.

what school, candyman?

many people just "think" the schools they go to are TOP schools. In reality, most of them are not.

many people just "think" the schools they go to are TOP schools. In reality, most of them are not. my school was ranked 496 by newsweek, and i dont consider it a top school.

St. John's College High School

where can i go to check out my high school's newsweek ranking?

To the OP, you'll know if you go to a top high school. If you're questioning it, it more than likely isn't a TOP high school.

my high school is ranked about 1,000. the thing is they dont enforce us to take the AP exams. But, this year they are making all the students in AP classses take the AP test, free of charge, thus making our rank better.

We don't rank high because a) we have to pay for the test b) they don't like encourage to take an AP class unless you feel you're ready for it

I feel everything is all relative in terms of college admissions. You're compared to your class, so if you go to a top high school, you have to work your butt off to stand out. If you go to a "bad" school, the standards are lower.

Oh please, tchaikovsky, mr. andover/ harvard-westlake ;). I would kill to go to one of those schools.

my school (int'l) is ranked 3rd in the province, 10th in the country. I don't know if this is considered top b/c I am international.

Which standard do I use?

And yes, if you go to a good school, you know it. The test score ranges are much higher than normal, students participate in more events, there's less crime rate in the area, more people win awards etc....

So easy to say you want to go to Andover before you get there. We slave, slave, slave!!!!!!

Would average SAT of 1310 and offers 22 APs be considered a "top" school?

It is competitive, but just SAT scores and APs, for me anyhow, don't define a top school.

Public High schools suck. Mine is #70s in the nation and 90% of the kids are stupid.
