How do you apply for a specific college's merit scholarships?

This might be a silly question, but how exactly do you apply for a specific college's merit scholarships? Do they automatically consider you when you apply to the college, or do you have to mention the scholarship somewhere?

For example, I'm possibly thinking of the Presidential Scholarship at Rutgers, or National Merit Scholarships.

There is NO standard answer for this question. You need to go to each college website and look for the criteria for applying to EACH scholarship you are interested in. Keep in mind that the requirements are often different for scholarships within the same university…so read carefully.

For example…when DD applied to U of South Carolina, they awarded the McKissick and Cooper scholarships based on the strength of your application. BUT the McNair scholarship required a completely different application.
