How do you avoid procrastination?

There have probably been numerous threads about this, but how do you set yourself to accomplish a task at a particular time and deadline without procrastinating?

i usually end up checking my email, facebook, news websites, then cc.

i already got rid of my facebook because it was a death trap for procrastination, but i can't procrastinate in college, so what's a way to focus and do something on time?

Get a stranger to hold a gun to your head.

Or hire a hooker to give you a pleasurable reward each time you complete an assignment

I turn it into a habit.

I force myself to study or do whatever assignment at the same time block everyday. And even on days I have nothing due, I’ll just review.

That way, it becomes a habit to complete–or at least start–everything each day. (I stole this from Cal Newport’s “autopilot” idea, and it works very well)

Then, you don’t have to think about or dread studying or finishing an assignment–you just do it automatically without really thinking about it.

I hope that made sense. If not, go to [Study Hacks](Study Hacks - Decoding Patterns of Success - Cal Newport) and do a search for “autopilot” he explains it a lot better.

I don’t

Jk for the most part xp I’m getting to know my potential…So I can procrastinate for as long as I know I’m able, then I get to work.

I try and find something even worse than whatever I’m procrastinating on, and then procrastinate on that but doing the work.

Your first step is to get off CC.

I don’t.

I just procrastinate the bare minimum

I write out a schedule with times to get certain things done… like if I have five tests the next day, I designate a certain time frame for studying for each class. I’ll give myself little 5-10 min. breaks in between each time frame, but if I procrastinate and get behind on my schedule I eliminate the breaks until I get back on schedule. I know it doesn’t really PREVENT procrastination, but it makes me feel I’m actually getting somewhere every time I get through one little time frame of studying :)

Also, I know it might seem overrated but listening to classical music does help to stay focused. Even if it’s only for small intervals at a time, find a classical piece that you like and make yourself do homework or study until it’s over, then take a break, and start it again. It sounds repetitive and boring, but more often than not it has worked for me. My personal favorite for studying is Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 :)

If you’re not into old classical music, movie scores are great as well.

Avoid procrastination later :D

I think of all the bad things that could happen if I continue procrastinating. Then I’ll stop.

Yes, this website can be addicting.

Don’t fight it, embrace it :)

the same way you avoid everything else, starts with a p.

I’ll give myself a little more time to start doing that.
