At my school, it’s simple. Whoever has the highest GPA is valedictorian. We’re ranked out of 100, so it’s a lot less likely multiple people will have the same GPA. Only our IB/AP classes are weighted, and you can only take them junior and senior year.

It works out that a 93 weighs to a 100 (you can’t go over 100). So really, people in full IB are the only ones who have a chance at val/sal. I’m currently 1, and 2 and 3 are also full IB. This likely won’t change at all because, since we get weighted up the same, whoever was highest before will stay highest. It’s all staying pretty proportional.

It goes by weighted GPA at my school, which is out of 6 points. 6 for an A in an AP/Honors, 5 in an A for an Academic level course, and a 4 for an A in any lower level course. Letter grades scale down from there.
Most, if not all, valedictorians at my school have a 6.00. That, in my opinion, is insane.

Be the biggest brown nose who kisses the most amount of administrative a** and have the highest GPA. Its about how much you care about your school and how high your scores are. That’s at least how it works in my district.

I am my school’s valedictorian–at least, they announced that I was at awards night–but the school year’s not even over!

Which is slight “loophole” that hasn’t been mentioned yet. Most schools award valedictorian after 7 or 7.5 semesters.

Theoretically, you only need to have the highest GPA up until that point. After that, you could bomb all of your finals and finish with a 3.0 but they won’t revoke it once they announce it.

I don’t plan on risking it, but I’ll take the insurance. :)

I decided to become valedictorian when I was in 9th grade and listened to more than one sermon about how women should stay home with the kids. I decided I would show them differently, lol. So I worked my tail off and did it.

I didn’t think much of it after high school. At my 30th reunion, though, people who used to tease me and/or ignore me DID remember and wanted their photo taken with me. It was so bizarre.
