How do you deal with Essays asking about "current" situations/events?

Hello everyone,

I occasionally come across essay assignments that leave me a little confused. After a while, I noticed that most of these prompts deal with current states of the world, rather than broad subjects, such as morality, creativity..etc.

Normally, I would use a number of books from literature to support my argument. I mainly use: 1984, The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Scarlet Letter (You're welcome to suggest any other books that you find helpful!.)

Some examples:
Is the most important purpose of technology today different from what it was in the past?

Have modern advancements truly improved the quality of people's lives?
(I thought I could support an argument that it didn't by using the 1920s' materialistic pursuits from The Great Gatsby and the obesity epidemic, or that it did by using Rosa Parker's advancement and recent advancements in cancer treatment and genome sequencing. But these examples seem a little weak.)

Is the world changing for the better?

Does fame bring happiness, or are people who are not famous more likely to be happy?

Any ideas on books, events, that would help answer this type of questions (Or universal examples that can be adapted to many essays) would be much appreciated.
