S2 is very interested in Georgetown. I think he will have the stats but not sure about a good "hook." He has a very unique performance-related EC he has been participating in for 8 years but it would have nothing to do with his major.

So can anyone venture to guess what Georgetown sees as a good "hook"?

On another note, I was talking to someone who's son just got accepted this spring and he said Georgetown gives Catholics extra weight. True?

I actually don’t think (but please correct me if I’m wrong) that Catholics get extra weight unless the university is familiar with the Catholic high schools the kids attended.

I don’t think the hooks are any different for Georgetown – recruited athletes, legacy, big donors. You son sounds like he has a good component to his application, though, with the performance related activity.

My son was just accepted to the SFS this year. Because Georgetown is a Jesuit University, it naturally receives more Catholic applicants and the population percentages may appear to be skewed favoring Catholics. I can only speak to my son’s experience this year. At no time during the application process or subsequent admission and orientation visits did GU talk about giving preferential treatment to Catholics or using religion as a “hook” for admission. What they did stress was that they wanted a well rounded CLASS that brings many different perspectives to campus, not necessarily a well rounded person. At parent orientation we were told that the ADCOM seeks a student body with multiple religious affiliations, political affiliations, etc. to accomplish their goal of a very diversified student body.

I agree with Blurry that Georgetown’s “hooks” are really no different than any other university.

If your son can show a demonstrated passion for something, that might be the thing that gets his application noticed. One of the letters my son received (after being admitted) had a couple of hand written lines from a dean of admission talking about my son’s unique service oriented project he’d established and worked on for years. It tied in perfectly with his application to the SFS. It sounds as though your son also has something he is passionate about and I would recommend he definitely include that somewhere in his essays or application. Tons of kids who apply well exceed the stats, he needs to show what he can bring to the student body and why Georgetown is the perfect fit for him.

definately being a recruited athlete
georgetown has very competetive D1 sports (besides football hahah)
they actively recruit and treat their athletes very well
think more Notre Dame, Duke, Northwestern sports instead of Ivy League sports

“I don’t think the hooks are any different for Georgetown.” - correct (URMs, nationally ranked in anything, recruited athletes, etc) Georgetown does not give Catholics extra weight, but there are a lot of Catholics that apply. It is important to note that the Jesuits have a 500±year-old history of educating all over the world, regardless of religion. What that means is that the admissions committee very much values religious diversity. So, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and Buddhist will be strongly desired.
