How do you determine tuition residency??

I applied to the UC (FINALLY!!) </p>

<p>but...</p>

<p>I'm very very concerned about how on step 8, it had something like "Residency for Tuition Purposes" with a few questions that asked if my parents or myself had been in CA for 3 or more years. I have never heard 3 years as the minimum! I thought it was 366 days? I'm so confused :(</p>

<p>Did anybody have this problem?</p>

<p>If for some reason I don't qualify for in state tuition, (and even that alone is too much,) I could not at all afford to go to the UC's. Ugh!</p>

To be considered a California resident for purposes of fees, an out-of-state student must have lived in California for more than one year preceding the residence determination date, relinquish residence in other states, show an intent to establish residency in California and demonstrate financial independence.

Unmarried undergraduates from other states qualify as financially independent if they were not claimed by their parents or others as dependents for tax purposes for two preceding tax years and if their annual income is sufficient to meet their needs. All married students and unmarried graduate and professional students from other states qualify as financially independent if their parents or others have not claimed them as dependents for tax purposes for the preceding year.

<p>I cannot give first hand information on the three years question as I have lived in California my whole life, but my guess is that if you have been here less than three years, you may have to submit additional information after acceptance. I know of others who had to submit supplemental information regarding residency for tuition purposes and I (technically) had the same “to-do” item. However, mine was listed as completed the moment it became available.</p>
