How do you do this?

Each of the following could change the median of a set of seven distinct numbers EXCEPT

(A) dividing each number by 2
(B) decreasing each number by 1
(C) decreasing the smallest number only
(D) increasing the smallest number only
(E) decreasing the largest number only

It's C, but why couldn't it be B?

if we decrease each number by 1 then the order would remain the same and hence the median would be the sam
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
dec by 1
0 1 2 3 4 5 6

median changes from 4 to 3

Think about this.
As long as the smallest number in the set stays small and as long as the largest number in the set stays large, the median will always be the same.

2 4 6 8 10 / Median = 6

-9484389 4 6 8 10 / Media = 6

2 4 6 8 9480584094383485/ Median = 6
