How do you feel about people opinions on your college choice.

Well im in Avid and im sure most of you know what that is (college Prep) and the thing is everybody seems to have a problem with the school i wanna go to. The thing is most of the people im around want to go to schools nearby like Howard and GeorgeTown but me on the other hand i wanna go to a school on the other side of the country. Whenever i get asked where i want to go and i tell them i get asked why, why do i wanna go so far, why don't i wanna go to something close and im just wondering how you feel about peoples opinions on your college choice?

P.s. i haven't said the name of the school to prevent bias.

I have the same problem. Then, when i mention Stanford, they go “oh you’re smart, you’ll get in” I’m like, it’s not that simple.

I have the same problem also. People look at me weird when I tell them that I want to go to college. They ask me if I realize that I have to graduate high school first. Then I say yes. Then they make funny reactions in reaction to my reaction to their question.

AVID lulzzzzzzzzz

When I tell people that Yale is my first choice, they always do this “oooooh” impressed reaction. Anybody can apply to Yale, people. Applying there really isn’t that impressive. And I agree with Jasonvdm about how they always say, “Oh, you’ll definitely get in.” It really isn’t that simple at all.

Yeah, I TOTALLY get it. I want to go out of state (about 2-3 flight from home) and everyone from my school goes to public state schools. It’s almost unheard of of someone leaving here so when I say I want to go to Florida everyone always rolls their eyes at me and basically says “good luck”.

OP, I have the same problem. I live along the east coast and when people ask me about the schools I’ve applied to, their mouths drop open when I tell them my first choice is in Seattle. Most kids from my school stay in-state and have grown up knowing the same people, so they can’t even fathom exploring a new region of the country and meeting new people. And I can’t imagine spending another four years here like they all seem to be so content doing.

Yeah, I need to get out, and get somewhere different.

ahaha I know what you mean >.<
For the majority of the population, I don’t let their opinions sway me.
My parents don’t want me to attend a university in the north east (3 hour flight).
Wait until they hear that I want to attend a university 13 hours away… T_T

Yeah, people here say, a lot of smart people go there. I say, yeah, but I love to surround myself with smarter people.

Hey, hey fellow DCer! Yeah, I wouldn’t consider schools here.

What I hate is when people tell me what factors I should consider (such as location). I mean, it’s as if some random family friend I’m talking to thinks s/he has put more thought into this than I have…really? So yeah, you’ve thought about it more, you know you better, so just go with your decisions.

I’ve had people tell me my choices are a bad decision. One person tried to tell me what a bad place Pepperdine is… REally?

It annoys me that so many people don’t know that my top choice is a “good school”. They’ve either never heard of “Amherst College” or think I’m talking about UMass. I just find it annoying to constantly have to explain the difference and that it’s not a community college in mass. :/

When I say that I plan on attending Purdue University for engineering, they’re pretty impressed by the strength of the program. (I’m from Indiana, so it’s totally common knowledge here.) And then I express my concern about getting in, and they’re all: you’re totally in, you’re so smart. And, whereas it is nice to know that people find you to be smart, it’s just kind of annoying to get that reaction every time.

Heck, 28 ACT means “you’re smart”. Come on now.

“Are there cows on campus?”

I personally don’t know, but I’m applying to MIT anyways. What do I have to lose but a few hours of sleep, 75 (or 85) dollars, and a lot of hair from stress from the agonizing wait for college decisions?

:D

My #1 shot is basically every slightly above average person’s top shot at my school. So when people ask and I tell them that it’s my top shot, they go oh yeah yeah. Not really anything special. But I am also applying to some other schools that all the “smart” people at my school think are total joke schools (basically the people who think prestige is everything). I’m a pretty reserved person when it comes to anger and etc, but if you make fun of me for the places I’m applying to, don’t expect me to be silent lol. I’ve *****ed out a few people already.

Everytime I say I want to go to Michigan, every person makes a damn face. 10% of my school is going to Michigan State and like 50% to Central Mich/Western Mich/Wayne State. Just because I want to go to Michigan, they tell me i’m trying to be a snob and be better than everyone else. Ill be a snob idc because i will never step foot into Central, Western or Wayne. (MSU maybe =] it’s my safety)

Everyone in this state hates UMich for some reason.

How about the “how about college xyz?”…hate that so much.

“You should apply to MIT - you’ve got a better shot than if you don’t apply at all, what is there to lose!?”

My response: I suppose that’s true for the first statement, but I would lose hours of my life and $80 or something like that. I don’t stand a chance at MIT but people think the school is so easy to get into as long as you have an 800 Math.

aspire2011,
you stole the words RIGHT out of my mouth. i TOTALLY agree with you. i don’t see how people don’t want to explore and just stay the only place they’ve ever known. that frustrates me so much. there’s so much life out there and they don’t even know it.
