And just how common does the practice seem to be?

I've seen A LOT of people privately munch on their foods in the campus libraries. They realize that the chances to be caught are slim, that most people won't bother to report it, and even if caught, the worst that can happen is that they're scolded.

the problem is that there aren't any places to eat anything in the libraries. for sure i am not going to take my very heavy backpack and everything with me just to walk outside, just in order to quickly eat something (which is very inconvenient when I have to log off the computer and to totally disrupt my chain of thought). I just try to be a responsible eater, that's all.

I don't care. Why should I care unless they're somehow distracting me? I bring coffee into the library all the time.

What does annoy me is jackasses who talk in the library. These people know damn well that everyone else can hear them- even if they whisper. Is is really that hard to go outside and talk?

At my school you are allowed to eat in most of the study libraries, so this is a non-issue for us. They have vending machines in rooms off to the side of the study rooms so people can grab a snack while studying.

i think it gross to eat in the libraries, what if there's a spill or something, the books begin to damage and the library can be come like a sort of cafeteria. I totally DISAGREE with that, it like eating in the computer lab. The books and library material gets messed up.

well sometimes you get really hungry so you have no other option but to eat in the libraries. i [personally can not consentrate if im hungry so i say: if you are hungry..eat wherever you want!!

I see nothing wrong with eating in the libraries, what i hate the most is when people talk--really hard to concentrate and forced to listen to their conversations.

They sell snacks and drinks in our library. I think the librarians would probably yell at you if you spilled anything on books, but most people use the library to study, not for actually using the books in there, in my experience.

The staff does not care at my school and I don't think any of the students care. They just don't want to see a mess or see any computers/books get damaged. People are drinking their Starbucks at the computers all the time and the librarians could care less.

In one of my libraries, you can eat "cold" foods. I suppose that means no greasy foods or soup. In the other one, there's a coffee shop on the first floor.

My rule is... just be smart about what you're bringing in. Fruits and veggies are good... no crumbs!

My library just totally brand new so they're keeping the food rules strict (essentially NO food) but they do let you bring in covered beverages. It does have a cafe on the top floor but it's pretty umm.... cold there.
