How do you feel about recording lectures, and listening to them later to study?

I’m a Biology major, and for all of my science classes, the professors record their lectures and post them online so that students can relisten to them to study. I do this sometimes, but it can also be very time-consuming. The professors post their lecture slides online as well. Do you believe it’s better to just read the textbook, go through the powerpoint slides, and use additional resources such as YouTube videos, websites, practice exams, etc. to study?

I had a few professors who did this. I either would watch the lectures if I missed class (only missed classes for a good reason like being sick) or if there was a concept that really confused me or something I didn’t quite catch. It was a great safety net. If you don’t need to rewatch the whole lecture, then there’s no reason to do so.

^Yeah, the above. Recordings of lectures are for students who maybe missed the class or need to re-listen to something important that they missed…you don’t need to re-listen to the class. Do what works for you.

Please try reading the book, look at the slides and listen to whatever is available. Depending on questions in class or on tests helps you to figure out your best strategy. You want to learn the material thoroughly with the test the best indication of how well you learned in depth. You study until you learn and produce. Of your choices, reading the text is essential and not optional. Have the slides up and available to you to help the content in the book more meaningful. As far as the other things, maybe listen while you clean you room and concentrate if something is really helpful. You might try setting a schedule with the book on the day that the particular material was just taught and !ook over slides, next day do slides and read the next section of the book. Keeping up with class content and combing it with you earned last time is helpful. Overall, decide what routine works for you and pitch, except the book, whatever doesn’t help.

Please, though, if you’re planning to record a lecture (as opposed to listening to one the prof recorded himself): you NEED to get permission first.
