My son is planning on applying to St. Lawrence University, although he hasn't visited. We're are from coastal California, so he has never lived in snow, but he has played club hockey for 11 years and loves to ski. He has also been impressed with his alumni interviewer, the staff there and all he's read. However, he just talked with a college counselor who said that the St. Lawrence location was like the end of the earth and truly abysmal. Any other opinions out there?

This thread hasn’t been too active, so if you don’t get replies, I suggest you re-post on the parents forum. They are really helpful there.

We visited St. Lawrence and my daughter loved it. It is very rural and far from a city. We live in NYC and my daughter really wants to be out of the city. The town is very small and seems nice.

My daughter was really drawn to SLU because she loves that students seem athletic, concerned about health, fitness, the environment. She will not play a sport in college, but loves exercise and outdoor activities.

However, when I recently asked her what she would do if she got into SLU (she has already been accepted at her other first choice, a school in Burlington VT), she said she thought she’d pick the other because she prefers Burlington. So, I guess the location is a bit of a negative for her, but only in comparison to Burlington, which she loved.

I appreciate the suggestion about reposting and the first hand information about St Lawrence, thanks very much!

hey, I currently go to St. Lawrence and although the location is rural, I really like it. The locals are really nice, I had a chance to visit local farms and I attended the farmers markets during the fall. The town is basically one road but its cute and an easy short walk into town. There are some cool waterfall spots a little ways off campus as well. Potsdam is about 15 minutes away and is a little bit bigger. There are also 4 colleges in the area, and Canada is 30 minutes away, Ottawa being about 1.5 hours I believe. The Adirondacks are also nearby and are very beautiful.

Thank you emily4264. It’s great to hear from a current student. Can you tell me what your major is and whether you participate in sports. What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about St. Lawrence?

A word here from an alum. It is remote. HOWEVER, the school did a great job bringing in a wide variety of entertainment on the weekends and I never felt deprived of a cultural life. Also, because of its remote location, you really develop close bonds with your classmates. To this day, many years later, I have ties to my classmates from SLU. Lastly, it is the only place in the world that I have ever seen the aurora borealis and it was spectacular. Wouldn’t trade that experience for any Broadway show. I might also mention that I spent my junior year abroad and became fluent in French and then went on to law school to have a successful law career in two states, New York and Massachusetts. St. Lawrence did that for me and I am eternally grateful. If she wants to shop at the mall, don’t go to St. Lawrence. If she wants a great education, the chance to study abroad, the opportunity to participate in many activities and to form true and lasting friendships, she should go to St. Lawrence.

My daughter is a freshman at SLU and was initially worried about the location. Last May she was torn between American and SLU but she told me this holiday that she made the right choice to go to SLU. She was born and raised in NYC most of her life and spent the second half of her schooling in the nearby suburbs. She is a city girl but she loves SLU. She could not wait to get back this weekend and has made lots of friends already. She is having a great experience and trying new things in the North country. Good luck!

Thanks to you all for the wealth of information. My son has decided to apply, and I think it’s a good choice. If accepted he’ll visit in April. It’ll be an adventure!

My son is a Junior and appreciates the incredible beauty of the North Country and of the St. Lawrence campus. Check out the video on the school website:

Parent and also alum here- SLU does a great job of being proud of it’s location and not hiding it’s unique location on the edge of the Adirondacks and St. Lawrence River, nestled between Ottawa and Lake Placid. They don’t make apologies for their location, in fact, they believe that it helps to define and make the student and wants students to fully understand the campus setting. I would agree that the location helps to make a close college community and keeps it from becoming a “suitcase” school. My children have traveled with their profs on several class trips to Ottawa and Montreal.

My daughter is studying in Copenhagen this semester and my son is a Senior. Both say that the professors have been fantastic, and I would agree. My kids work very hard at their courses and have the support of a outstanding academic staff who has helped them to develop top notch critical thinking skills, both written and verbal . They are extremely well prepared for an interesting future in an ever changing world.

My daughter is a figure skater, and did hope she would have greater opportunity to get on the ice…but hockey rules.

A wonderful school with great academics, study abroad, good financial aid and athletic facilities. My D recently graduated, we really can never say enough good things about SLU, “A Candle in the Wilderness.”
