How do you fill out a PDF document?

Probably really obvious, but I just can't figure out how to type in it. Help?

The creator of the PDF document has to enable it to be typed into by viewers.

Or else you have to buy the full Adobe Acrobat Suite.

So you can't fill out online apps without printing them and writing everything in?

On line apps have fields in which you type. You can't change the protected part of the document (like the questions). If it's a real PDF, like some supplements are, then you do have to print them. That's expected.

The Common App's website lets you fill it out online. But why would you fill it out as a PDF? You should apply online anyway, which usually shows you a filled out version of the application once you submit it.
