How do you find an accompanist in a strange town?

Hello, dears. Son has audition in Washington DC, and I have NO idea how to bag an accompanist there; how did others deal with this, please?

The audition is at a college? Well, actually, even if it’s not, can’t you just call or email a DC college’s music department and ask them if they would use their regular channels to find you an accompanist? My son’s a music major. Accompanists were either assigned by the college or he brought his own on each of his college auditions. Now, as a college kid, he gets gig-emails from “his” music school informing him and others in the school that this or that person or company are looking for an accompanist, a recording artist, a singer, a violinist, etc. Typically, the emails either contain a flyer or the original email from the person who wants to hire the musician – a very informal system in other words.

As SimpleLife says, most major college music programs have a “Hire a student”, “Gig Line”, or similar service as a link or number on the music department’s website.

The local Am Federation of Musicians Union also maintains a similar service, and you can find the specific local that serves the area by going to the AFM’s site.

Is it an audition for a graduate/undergrad program? (You did not specify). If so, I would try and arrange first through the school.

The audition is for undergrad, but for a program in the midwest, so it’s being held at a music STORE, actually. They must have some lesson rooms they rent out or something. It’s in College Park, which I see is where the University of Maryland is, among others. I will check the local Am Fed. of MU, and thank you for that advice.

You might also want to contact a grad student or doctoral candidate, or instructor at UMCP.
