<p>It's usually something you infer from reading the passage... you have to look for key words that carry with them positive or negative connotations. Do you normally read the entire passage through or skim it? You can never fully grasp the author's purpose without reading the passage, IMO.</p>
<p>It might help to remember that the tone is never one of the extreme choices on either end, like "blazingly disparaging" or "unrestrained adulation". That usually knocks it down to 3 choices.</p>
<p>Just read a lot and it will come naturally...</p>
<p>I don't usually read the whole passage front to back but I can just kind of 'tell' the author's mood, mostly based on the language he uses and what he says. What highopes said is very true: positive and negative connotations are key. </p>
<p>And Yeti, there are occasions of the extreme choice being the correct answer, the Oct 15 PSAT comes to mind...</p>
