How do you get a Dean's Scholarship??

To get a scolarship from Northeastern, such as the Dean's Scolarship, do you have to apply to it separately?

I remember there being a question on the Common Application that asked, "Do you intend to apply for merit-based scholarships?" I checked NO on that because I wasn't sure how to apply for a merit based scholarship. Are there extra forms you have to fill out and get signed by your counselor or something? Will I be able to get a scholarship even though I selected "no"?

I am really confused and I feel like I made a mistake by selecting "no" for merit based scholarships. I have a lot of other schools asking the same question and I am not sure whether I should select "yes" or "no".

I didn’t apply for anything. It came with my acceptance letter.

@meghanupsidedown, did you check “yes” on the question where it asked you if you intend to apply for a merit-based scholarship?

excelerate, all applicants are considered for the merit scholarships. It goes by your stats, not by a special application or a response on the common app.

@wildberry, why would Northeastern ask if I am going to apply for a merit-based scholarship than? Should I check yes or no? What is a merit-based scholarship, and do I have to apply separately for one?

Isn’t their like a National Merit competition or something? I always hear of these National Merit Finalists.

@excelerate: You should check “yes” for merit scholarships. The adcoms automatically consider you for merit scholarships (no extra paperwork or forms required). Merit scholarships is basically free money given to students who show impressive stats. The National Merit scholarship is something different. NMS is given to people who scored high enough on the PSAT.

excelerate, since it’s my daughter who’s going to Northeastern and not me I didn’t do the common app - was the question part of the Northeastern supplement or part of the common app?

At any rate, I can’t see any reason to check ‘no’ to a question like that. Never hurts to apply! I only knew there was a question regarding financial aid, I didn’t know there was one on merit aid on there.

@illusiondestiny @wildberry, thank you for your help! I think I will check “Yes” and hope for the best. I did not want to be at a loss by checking “no”, and wasn’t sure if there was requirements for merit-aid or some form I had to fill out prior to filling out the common app.

The question was on the Common App Future Plans section. The Future Plans section is different for each college.

@illusiondestiny, thank you for making clear what the National Merit Scholarship things was. I never qualified for that so I guess I do not have to worry about it :). Thanks!
