How do you get an internship/job offer from Stern?

Hi, I'm transferring from another 4-year university and I am majoring in Finance at Stern. At the university that I'm leaving, a student with a 3.9+ would likely have a difficult time landing an internship/full-time offer at even a boutique bank. I'm wondering how high of a GPA would be a "safe bet" to get a internship/job offer for a target school like Stern for investment banking (IB Division, in general)? What about for consulting? Also, what would be some good resources to use in addition to the Wasserman Career Center? Thanks in advance,

Consulting companies don't really recruit at Stern. Something like 1% went into that field. Don't have the source on hand.

Connections are really the best way to land a job. You also apply to jobs through Wasserman, as well as through the companies themselves.

No such thing as a safe bet. It's all about your interview. As long as you have a solid resume and a 3.4-4.0 you'll probably find a company to interview you and it's all up to you to show them that you have a personality (unlike most of stern) along with the fact that you're smart and know your stuff (like most of stern). Good luck.

we have very high ibanking recruitment, lower S&T and consulting recruiting (dont really know the cause and effect, but very few people want to go into those fields here)

Ibanking you really need a 3.9 for a safe bet. Ibanking is the most competitive field in probably the world, so you really need high gpa, high social skills, ability to ace tough interviews, etc.

I agree with mattistotle - for investment banking, you're going to need AT LEAST a 3.5, but something like 3.9 would be more of a safe bet. I had an offer from UBS for this summer (turned it down to do consulting; I did banking during the school year) and I'm a CAS econ major. My network and interview were tremendous in getting me the offer, so you really need to develop both your networking and interview skills.

As for consulting, you're going to have a very hard time landing a job from Stern. I'm interning at The Monitor Group, a top 5 firm, and there are no undergrad Stern kids here doing an internship or working full-time (there are 2 Stern MBAs though).

The guy who interviewed me told me that the top consulting companies don't recruit at Stern; if I were you, I focus on i-banking. Stern is a good feeder-school into that field.

so are the internships (in general - but in my case for business-oriented internships) obtained through career fairs? or do you have to apply directly through some sort of job listing found through the university?

i'm asking because everyone says "nyu = internships galore" and i was wondering if companies actually come to "recruit" through something else besides career fairs.

alot are through interviewnet, alot are through networking

Do you guys think any of the business frats are worth joining? Beta Alpha Psi? Alpha Kappa Psi?

No, they are for tools

Haha ok. Which business clubs would you recommend on campus, if any?

I don't really recommend anything. There is no "Club to join" in regard to getting a good job, anywhere. Do what you're interested in.

Oh yeah I didn't mean it like that (I was kinda changing the subject). I'm definitely joining clubs I like, but I was just wondering which business club(s) was active at NYU since there seem to be so many.

Investment Analysis Group.

ya beta alpha psi is a POS. I joined it, they talk about how you NEED it to get a good finance job, but they have done nothing but waste my money (well only $215) and time (lots). Everyone few weeks theyll send out an internship offer for a $10 an hour internship at like wachovia, or back office at a MM, and then 100 people apply for it, its asinine. Its not socially based at all, so you won't really even meet any good friends to network with. You are better off just joining a normal frat my GSP friend in PIKE with a *ty gpa was able to get front office offers at BB through frat brothers, when 3.5+ from BAP in Stern don't get jack *

Indeed, the recent statistic says that 98.23% of people on this board won't even get a job in Ibanking.

likewise with alpha kappa psi? everyone at rutgers joins AKP

"Indeed, the recent statistic says that 98.23% of people on this board won't even get a job in Ibanking."

Considering the fact that you go to Bentley, I think we can safely assume that you are part of that 98.23%.

ha, crushed

"At the university that I'm leaving, a student with a 3.9+ would likely have a difficult time landing an internship/full-time offer at even a boutique bank."

Ouch dude. Ouch.

Don't diss on Davis like that. At the very least it got us both into better schools. Anyway, how are you liking NYU so far? Congrats, too, btw.
