Honestly, adcoms are probably sick of reading essays about kids pretending to be oh-so-passionate about whatever they think will give them the best chance of admission. Maybe 10% of rising seniors have truly found things they’re passionate about, probably no more than that. I think that the key to a college essay is just being personal, grammatically correct, and interesting.

You can bet that most people who right the standard: Over the years, though other factors in my life have changed drastically, I have continued to be passionate about [insert passion] are full of b.s. And you can bet that many (if not most) of them get small envelopes come April.

EDIT: So, from what you guys are telling me, I think I have to pursue my interests, be involved in my community and be proactive/take the initiative.

Yup. Focus on what you like, the rest will follow. You’re only a rising sophomore, think about college once you hit Junior year. Who knows? You might not even want to go to an Ivy by then (assuming you get in).

passion gives an individual character that sets him/her apart from others.
having a passion will let the others know that you have the ability to deeply enjoy something and be dedicated to it.
colleges, especially ivy league, will look for people that are unique and can change the world in some way, not someone who will not be noticeable among other people.
so having passion can give you a great advantage when it comes to college admissions, or any other stages of life.

to get a passion, i would recommend considering your interests (maybe in school subjects, etc.)
for example, if you like science better than math, you can join a club or talk to your science teacher or counselor to see if you find it interesting to learn more about it.
also, what you do in your free time gives you a hint, because it means that you find that particular thing fun enough to keep doing it.
you can get an idea of how to start developing a passion towards that area.

i hope this helps… being a high school student, i found it hard to find a passion at first.
but now i’m starting to get a vague idea about it now, and i’ve got to start living the idea (:
