at my hs u have to have a 3.5 gpa, leadership, and community serivice,

At my school, it's a cumulative 3.5, and you gota show a resume with leadership qualities, as well as services to the school and community, as well as have teachers write up stuff for you

At my school, you need a 3.4 GPA, extracurricular activities, and leadership...At my school, you need to be a junior, so I'lll be joining this year...My GPA is far over 3.4, I have held leadership positions, and I am involved in about six club (including Key Club, where I have almost 250 hours from the past two years).

in my school its a secret society

during your junior year, seniors stalk you in the hall and quitely abduct you, then they undergo induction rites (im not allowed to speak of most of it but it is rumored that all NHS members are blood brothers), and a lot of hazing.
from what ive discerned the only requirements are an unweighted above 95 cumulative gpa and one varsity sport.
in my school we... i mean, they are very active despite the fact that no one besides their own know the full membership roster which protects them throughout their various and usually disruptive demonstrations. think senior pranks the whole year round and you have some idea of what they do.
i've already said too much.

oh and btw mcz, no one cares if your gpa is far over f.you or how many community service hours you have, the question wasnt an invitation for you to list your personal achievements, though they are obviously quite stellar \sarcasm

Someone's got problems...

no problems, i just enjoy being a d**k

Oh, whatever...As long as you proudly admit it...

Ours is huge, but the restrictions are fairly strict. You need a 3.7, I think, need to fill out an application detailing your service and leadership experience, and must have five teacher/coach recommendations (not to menion you must be a junior or senior). But since I go to a school of overachievers, we have around a hundred members.

At ours, it's sort of selective...

You can be selected to apply after 2nd semester of junior year. Need to have a cumulative uw GPA of 88. Then, you fill out application with all your leadership, clubs, involvement, service, etc. and an essay. Then every teacher in the school is asked whether you'd make a good NHSer, and if all's well you're in. I didn't make it at first because of a lack of leadership, so I had to go through the appeals process quickly, before the induction date. So I realized I had stuff that could count for leadership, did that and got in. So I'm happy. Another line on my college applications is good enough for me.

Out of about 400 students in my grade, about 80-100 make it in every year. The most elitist ceremony for induction I've ever seen. Made me want to vomit.

what necessarily is leadership? can it be other stuff besides office positions? like academic leadership music leadership, etc...?

I think the category's pretty broad. For me, I'm in a club where 20 upperclassmen mentor 20 underclassmen, and I teach younger kids at my mosque, though it's definitely not an official position or anything. The application defined leadership as something along the lines of "where you were responsible for motivating others or held an office," and other such things.

93 Average
7 Teacher Recs
40 hours of leadership (ie: I started a drive for the needy)
80 hours of community service

Yea, its kind of unfair because its actually a huge deal at my school whereas as in the town over you get in with a 93...

at my school, 6 out of the 7 teachers you had the previous year have to agree on letting you in, it is selective, you have to have a gpa of 3.5 or higher, only jrs, sophomres, and seniors get in. it's secretive they send a letter telling your parents not to say anything, which is pretty lame, but whatever, then they have this big induction ceramony, you get your pin and card and take a picture

well i've been section "leader" in all county, school orchestra, etc.... a lot of music events, and im a leader of a trio and a quartet. ive also received "leadership" awards in academics. would those count as "leadership" positions?

Not at our school, captains of teams doesn't count either. You have to start some sort of drive and run it.

What a weird definition of leadership willmington, heh. So how many people actually do start things?

I am in NHS only because I want to wear a cool sash at the graduation. That's it- I don't care about academic honor, how people think of it, etc. I just want to wear a sash. Is it a dumb reason to be a part of NHS?

Of course not!

If you have a certain GPA, you're nominated towards the end of junior year. Then you apply with a resume and all that junk. They look for community service and academic excellence. Only about 20 or so people get in, but it doesn't mean much.

how does NHS look on college apps?

Well if it's to a top college almost everyone will have it. So it's good to have for the sake of not being a behind (as in... missing a line on your app that others have).
