How do you get into the school of nursing?

Hi!

I'm currently a senior in high school and I am very interested in attending UT Austin and applying to their school of nursing. I had a few questions though, and they may sound extremely dumb so bear with me! My parents did not attend school in America and they are not exactly the best at keeping up with the times haha so I don't have any kind of parental advice going for me or anything. OK, anyways....

I keep hearing things about taking pre-reqs or something like that before going into nursing? Or something? Does this mean that I cannot apply to the School of Nursing straight out of high school? Like when I send in my college application?

If that is the case (where I cannot apply to nursing until after completing the required courses), when do I apply? And how competitive is it to get in? Who would be a good candidate to get in?

This question doesn't exactly pertain to the discussion title, but I AM DYING TO KNOW lol. How hard is the nursing school??? Or nursing school in general? I'm sososo excited for my future as a nurse, but I'm also very worried and I feel as if I'm missing a lot of information that I should know before I get myself into this crazy (but awesome!) profession.

If you yourself are a nurse or currently enrolled in a nursing school, please tell me just...anything, really! All info would be helpful and thank y'all so much!

I’m probably not ideal reply (I’m pre-pharmacy), but I did a quick research on your 1.

From the nursing school undergraduate academics page:
“Freshmen Admission
Prospective UT-Austin freshmen students should visit the Office of Admissions website, Be a Longhorn, for information on procedures and requirements. Select Nursing as your first choice major and follow directions to complete Essay C.
Beginning in Fall 2014, freshmen may be admitted directly to the School of Nursing through the University of Texas at Austin admissions process. The 2014-2016 catalog reflects a revised BSN curriculum.”

The way it was explained to me by my nursing friends, the first 2 years of college is represented as a pre-nursing major while you take courses. It’s the last two years when you’re officially a nursing major of the school (although there’s an application process to declare that).

On a side note, you could check bealonghorn page and search nursing.

Hey @smallkid9 tell me about pre-pharm though. is there a specific essay I have to complete or anything I have to do when I apply?

Hi! I’m a nursing major and just got in to UT Austin. I transferred from some CC.
this will be my second yr in college.
So you really don’t get into “The Nursing School” until after 2 yrs or after finishing all your required science courses. After taking all your required science courses then you can apply to the Nursing Program to earn ur degree. I’m assuming ur doing BSN which takes 4yrs. 2yrs pre reqs(science courses) then 2 yrs of the actual nursing program.
I suggest you have back-up plans because the Nursing program has limited space and with UT they only accept the best. I’ve been told by a counselor that they only accept an average of 3.7/3.8 GPA.

To make the answer clear.

 1. You can apply to be a Nursing Major and if you get accepted you will be put in the Nursing path. but you will still have to apply to the Actual nursing program because like I told you the first 2yrs are only pre requisites for the actual nursing program.

You apply after you complete all the required science courses and other pre-requisites. It is extremely competitive. You absolutely cannot have a GPA below 3.0 on the required classes. So an A is a must. 3.8 GPA will probably gurantee you a spot, but always have a back up plan.

Nursing is very challenging if you can’t handle stress it is not for you. Also if you are not good at memorizing and critical thinking it is not for you. Money is a problem, because I’m telling you those Science books are damn expensive!

PS: Work ur butt off during Senior year because it will be very hard to get in to the Nursing School for incoming freshmen. Do a lot of community service, volunteering, do everything to make you stand out! Being in the top 7% will help tremendously!

GoodLuck!

When I did ApplyTexas, there wasn’t any separate essays needed. Personally I selected undeclared/pre-pharmacy under College of Natural Science for the major selection.

Obviously you don’t have to apply as undeclared. I remember at orientation, there was a separate meeting for those planning a pre-health route. It was filled with incoming freshman of various planned majors.

Remember, the current priority (as HS senior) is your college acceptance then your major related acceptance. You can always have a conversation with admissions for more questions.

If you want, I can message you the website of UT’s Pre-pharmacy general information page.

Thank you everyone for the awesome answers!!! I’m super nervous but I’m determined to work harder and hopefully things will work out :)

@smallkid9 alright thanks!

Hey girlfromwold1!
I was recently accepted into the Nursing program at UT straight out of high school and I’ll be starting this fall. This past year, they changed the program so that you DON’T have to apply for upper division after completing 2 years of pre-reqs. (Yup, it’s a big deal). However, they also made the program more selective. At a college meeting they told us that 17% of ~1,000 applicants were admitted. Once you get in, you’re good to go for all four years though!
The new program also begins Nursing courses in sophomore rather than junior year. So, you get to be adorned in the fabulous burnt orange scrubs sooner. Lulz
Anyways, best of luck applying and feel free to message me if you have anymore questions!
