How do you get your IGETC certified?

Can someone describe the process by which we become IGETC certified?

I'm applying for transfer this coming fall, and I'm on track to have the IGETC completed once I'm finished with my summer courses. Should I talk to a counselor right after I'm done with it? Does certification mean we receive some sort of written documentation that says we're done with general ed. transfer requirements?

Sorry if this has been asked already. I tried a search, but I failed to find the same question.

ok so finish your IGETC by completing all of the classes that it outlines. When you apply it’ll ask if you will be IGETC certified by the time you transfer and you will say yes. Once you get in (optimistic thinking is the key) they will give you ur terms of admission and one of them will be that u submit ur high school transcripts, cc transcripts, and IGETC certification. This can be picked up in the same office where u get ur transcripts. Its basically a piece of paper that says what classes u took to fulfill the IGETC and just says yes this person is certified.

no that is wrong^ lol. you have to go into your councilor’s office and tell your councilor to fill out your IGETC. its the same thing as a AA degree basically, it takes the same amount of time and the paperwork looks identical. it takes about ten minutes in the councilor’s office, when you complete your last IGETC req it will be processed and be updated into your file.

for some schools, like davis, i think ucla, ucb, and uci (but not possitive) you need to do all this early because those schools require you to sign a contract and this has to be done early in the year… go do some research or go to your transfer center at your CC to find out that info exaclty for yourself

My school said otherwise. Its the office that gives out transcripts that you have to talk to, not your counselor.

They even have a technician, or a specialist with the IGETC (someone who’ll look at your HS records, blahblah)

why would they look at your hs records?^

anywho, it is a whole different office, however (at least with my school) you have to request that your IGETC be certified. they dont go through ever single student in the school and pick out the ones who are qualified. so, like i said, its like filling out an audit for a degree to be filed.

to answer your q more completely, go to your friggin school and figure it out. no you dont just sit on your butt and, or check a box on the internet; action is required to get IGETC’ed

^
Foreign language requirement.

It is safe to say from the replies so far, that is is different for each community college.

At my particular CC, the IGETC certification had to be by an evaluator in Enrollment Services. They fill out the IGETC themselves and sign it. You may go see a counselor to fill it out with you (so you may see what you still need/if you are completed) but they do not sign off on it. At least, this is for my CC.

Thanks for all the responses. As JulietKim stated, it seems as though the IGETC certification process is different for each community college. I’ll go check out what I have to do at my school.

Thanks again. I appreciate all the feedback.

ah forgot about the language thing. you are correct there, sir

Certification was an option on my transcript request (I was at Santa Rosa JC).

I went into the record’s office at my school, told them I needed IGETC certification. They said come back in 2 hours. I did that. They showed me a paper and asked if everything was correct. After I said everything was right they put it into an envelope and put their seal on it. It was that simple for me :/
