how would you go about asking for a recommendation from a professor at a different university over the summer. I will be taking two classes at Harvard this summer, and i want to get a recommendation for transfer, but i wont be transferring til the end of sophomore year. (im a high school senior and incoming freshman at texas)

should i even try and get one? and if i should, should i ask after the class is over and i get my grades, or should i wait until a year later when i plan to transfer.

(i am not applying for transfer at Harvard, most likely will be trying to get into university of chicago as junior transfer after sophomore year.)

Toward the end of the course (or after it has ended) when you have clear evidence that you are doing well in the course, and that you have a developed a positive relationship with the professor, you visit that person during his/her office hours, and say (more or less):

“Professor X, as you know I am planning to attend University Y this coming year. To be honest, I am a bit uncertain as to whether I will find that environment congenial, and I may be applying to transfer elsewhere after a year or so. If I were to decide to do so, do you believe that you would be able to write a letter of recommendation for me, based on my performance in your class?”

If the answer is positive, you then ask (more or less):

“How would you recommend that I stay in touch with you, or get in touch with you in the future should I indeed need a letter of recommendation?”

Good luck!

thank you very much!!
