hummer-
i don't think they will kick you off for more than one year. I think more students (soph or juniors, depending on the college) will get kicked off in any given year.

Thanks, Apollo.

My s. clarified for me that all the proposals are just that--proposals. Until the Board of Trustees votes on them, nothing will change. This is how the decision re: the Div I vs Div III sports was handled. Personally, I would have liked to have seen Rice vote to change to Div III and save the school bundles of $$$, but that's not how the vote went. The Wall Street Journal wrote a great article about this decision a few yrs back. I believe I posted a link to it in a previous Rice thread, but I'll have to look for it. I'll repost the link to the article if I find it. Fascinating reading.

At any rate, the other thing that was at one point on the list of things to upgrade/rebuild/what-have-you, is the sad, tired old outdated gym. It really is a tad embarassing. The workout facilities that the athletes get to use is classy, but the general gym is from a bygone era....

The thing is, a couple of notable athletics departments wouldn't have been too pleased with a change to Div III (baseball, track, and basketball, I think)...especially baseball. But I'll definitely second the vote on rebuilding Autry (the gym)...it's definitely usable, but it's quite pathetic. A top 20 school should be able to do better. With that said, I think this is the first improvement slated for rebuilding if leebron's proposals get through (which I think will - they're sound).

yea, rice has a good baseball team. it wouldnt be good to switch to div 3 when they do awesome in a higher division

Here's a link to a discussion in the Sept '04 article in the WSJ about Rice's Sports programs, and the recommendation from the outside consulting co. to shift down to Div III http://blog.kir.com/archives/001169.asp
Sure, there would be disappointment in some athletic depts if the school changed to a Div. III school, but personally, I think that Rice has a huge gaping bleeding financial hole in its side by remaining a Div I school. This article really explains the finances of it, and how only the best Div I football schools profit from being Div I because they get big revenue from TV/bowl participation. Unless the Div. I schools share this advertising $$, Rice will just continue to lose tons and tons of $$ by remaining Div. I. Just my opinion, especially after reading the full WSJ article. Can anyone pull up the article in its entirety?

As for the gym, I believe Leebron was pretty embarassed when his inauguration had to be moved into that dinosaur of a gym due to inclement weather. ( Autry sorta looks like it belongs in a High School, with the big velvet curtains separating parts of the gym... I remember those curtains in my elementary school gym 40+ years ago!). The rebuilding of Autry got a prompt boost on the priority list after that

Here's the link to Rice's press release back from Spring of 2004, summarizing their decision to continue as Div I, to address the $10million/yr. revenue loss due to remaining a Div. I school, and plans to build a new gym/recreation/convocation center. http://professor.rice.edu/professor/Athletics_Report.asp
There is also a link to the 123 pg report/recommendation from McKinsey and Co, who was commissioned to do the feasability study. Anyone out there want to read it and write us a nice summary?? :) Truly, the Nov 20 2004 Wall St Journal article said it all, but I cant get into the archives. Anyone out ther have a WSJ subscription who can cut and paste the article??

Note to Stanford_dude: I am from the Midwest (IL), and now I know that rice has great law, grad, and undergrad schools. Add another tally to your fingers.

Anyhow though, does coming from the Midwest help or hurt your chances at getting into Rice seeing as not many ppl apply from here? Just curious...

Note to amazingspiderman: I am from the Midwest too, and wanted to let you know Rice doesn't have a law school. I said BUSINESS school. ;)

Don't worry about whether or not your geographic residence will have an effect. Just hope your application is strong, man. Good luck.

right... now I know rice has a GREAT business school. Now add that tally ;)
