How do you guys land research internships?

After reading this thread.....I just emailed 14 professors....will email 20 more tomorrow....:)

So does anyone know how to :D - without making the letters seem too impersonal? I feel a bit uncomfortable just saying, "Hi, blah blah blah," without addressing the person I'm talking to.

I've heard you're supposed to comment on their research as well o_O.

It would be really helpful if someone would post a sample email.

Sending out mass emails may land you a position, but it may not be one you end up enjoying. Before you send out emails, read a little about the work going on in each P.I.'s lab. Try to read a paper from the lab and find some type of research that you find interesting. You can find research papers (or at least abstracts) online from resources like Google Scholar and PubMed. It may take a while, but after you have read through this background info, you'll have a better perspective to write your letter from. Explain that you're looking for a volunteer research position. Say that you've read some of the paper and note what you find interesting. Give your background and thank them from their time. That may seem like a lot, but keep it concise, since most researchers don't have tons of free time.
