How do you guys start an online business?

many of you CC’ers have a online business in which you guys have created. How did you all know how to create a online business website at such a young age? I have many online business ideas but I dont know how to start it. How do I know if my idea is already in use? if it is already in use, would it be legal to create another site that serves the same function?

I got the idea when I went into one of my dad's stores and saw that he had a lot of extra merchendise that wasnt being sold. So I asked him if I could try to sell them online and get a precentage of the profit. It was mad slow in the begining, but as time went on, it picked up rather nicely.

but how did you know how to create the whole online website and all the other logistical stuff?

I did it off ebay much easier. I used to have a website when I was in the nightclub business, but my friend made that for me. You have to know about computers and **** for that one or hire someone who does.

Its all a matter of getting the idea and then figuring out from there. At least that was what happened with me. The one true online business I had (I think I talked about it before) was this counter strike clan thing. I basically got a beat up old computer, upgraded it a little and got these people who wanted to play a dedicated server. Charged them 20 bucks a month and eventually my friend and I expanded it to three clans. At its peak there were 106 members i think. Its all a matter of finding an opportunity and exploiting it enough. As for logistics, once the first server was up and running the rest sort of fell into its place.

Those were some pretty good times haha. BTW I will say this though: Don't start a business for college. I think there was a thread in the past where some guy was trying to peddle some business with three fig revenue. They will only care when the business is really generating significant income and it shows dedication.

I dont want it for college...I had a pretty good idea that I would like to expand. it is sort of like ebay and amazon.

I have a website grossing about 60k per year.

Think that is worth listing?

No. It's not. Don't bother.

Honestly.. kids on these forums need to stop fishing for compliments

honestly, is there any reason to flame me for my post?

Maybe you should do something more productive with your time than post 1123 times.

Alright man. If your business grosses 60K and its actually your own then yes you should be putting it down. When I say trivial business its those "web design business" which has made 3 figures-4 figs in a year.

Well, I apologize if that was a sincere question, but it really didn't seem like one. You'd think a teenager that has the talent and dedication to start such a lucrative venture would know the answer of a question like that... obviously not...

How do we show the colleges our income. Tax forms?

Yea tax should be best. Or you could have the income in a spreadsheet or something with links to your site etc or a one month business transaction statement.

Sorry man.

I have just heard stories of teens making millions on websites, and I really did not know if it was frivolous information.

And the 60k isn't profit. Only 30% is. And for the amount of time I spend on it, I probably only make 7-8 bucks an hour. Not exactly lucrative :(.

Trust me 18K per annum on a side project is respectable when compared to the majority of the "businesses" (aka webdesign "business" making 3-4 figure incomes)

cc77cc, it also is important what area your business is in. I wouldn't mention it if its something like selling adult toys, playing online poker, or selling contraband on ebay
lol

Why waste four years at wharton then? ;)

I'm a pilot, so I sell pilot supplies.

Yeah, yeah... Trying to think up the "next big thing" and be set for life :p.

60K? That's great! I think that's an excellent thing to put down. If I had an extra 18k a year, life would be a whole lot more fun. Still, I think you should put down all your business ventures, even if they made less than a thousand dollars. It's just another way to show you're interested in business.

Does anyone know Wharton's acceptance rate for ED and RD?
