How do you guys stay awake at night?

What do you guys do to stay awake when you're, let's say, studying for a physics test? Last night, I drank Red Bull (gross!) and remained alert for ~2 more hours. A friend of mine recommends caffine pills. I'm looking ahead to finals time. Suggestions?

Why not just space your studying out so you're not forced to stay up late? Besides, it doesn't help to study an extra two hours if that means you'll be going to school tired the next day. My advice?...get some sleep.

How do I stay up? At my school you're forced to have sleep deprivation, so after a while it isn't sleep deprivation anymore. You just get used to it. So when you get 6-7 hours...it feels GREAT!

Oh 6-7 hours is heaven.

Hahah RodLo - I've been trying to practice staggering studies out, but plans never work out the way they're supposed to. There's always something that has to get done today, pushing studying to "tomorrow."

Oh yeah, if anyone does have any suggestions, please note that I don't have a coffee machine. I have to go to Starbucks for all my coffee-related needs. Also, I'm not that caffine-savvy.

My body doesnt start shutting down until about 3 am

Don't take caffeine pills or anything! You'll stay up if you need to.

Oh, I just went to High School Life and there's already a thread on this topic! Stupid me. I give my apologies for starting this thread although I'd still appreciate any advice =).

Glucose101 - are they bad for one's body?

I heard they are addictive; it's a stupid way to die, if you ask me.

haha, same here. I'm dragging all day, but as soon as it hits 7 or 8pm, I'm up and ready to go.

IB has adapted my body well to not sleeping. I average about 4-6 hours a night. I can't even sleep late on the weekends, I've become so accustomed to not sleeping.

My goal is ~3hr/weeknight average (until winter break begins), but I can't stop myself from falling asleep at the most inconvenient of times. Maybe I'm aiming too high? Five hours wouldn't be too bad, if only my sleep-addled brain and my sleep-deprived body would obey me.

im used to going to sleep late, its just the way ive trained myself to sleep over four years lol, because of huge amount of work. whenever i need to i eat some fruits and drink diet coke. fruits dont have those carbs of breads that put you to sleep, and soda has caffeine. problem solved for me.

Every half hour or so, drink something(water) eat something SMALL(i like crackers) and then turn on the radio (quietly if there are other people in the house) and dance to whatever song is playing! Or if you're not as dance-happy as I am do sit ups or pushups or something to stimulate your blood flow. Run a lap?

try going to sleep for an hour and then setting your alarm clock. Then make sure you sleep for a least another hour before you have to get ready for school. For example:
10-11 PM: Sleep
11-4 AM: Study, Do hw
4-5: Sleep
My brain doesn't really realize that I wasn't sleeping the whole time. Or at least until bio, then i fall asleep.

Heh. It's now 5:22 am here and I've been awake since 6 am Thursday morning. wince That's what history does to you.

princessbell's advice is good, and safe-ish, cause trying to set your alarm to 3 or 4 am...well, for me, that doesn't work. Better to nap after dinner and stay up the whole night, either eating sugar, chewing ice cubes, setting your alarm clock/mobile phone set to loud to snooze every 30 minutes so you HAVE to be awake to hit snooze again or risk annoying your house/roommate...hmmm...what else? Music helps, sometimes, as long as you don't get distracted that you listen more to music than do your work.

Speaking of which, I should get back to history homework (first period today!) Darn addictive CC! I managed to curb it for a week!

im so used to sleep deprivation that im more tired the next day when i get 7 hours of sleep than i am when i get 4 hours of sleep

dude, whenever i really, honestly needed to stay awake, i would drink a lot of coffee - eat plenty of sweet chocolate. but i found my body not advocating such a technique and only tagged along until 3:30 AM. afterwards, it simply said "NO" - and I said OK and took it to bed.

i'm tellin' you man. do NOT sleeze around. get your crap done right after class and you'll save soooooo much time in the long run; and you'll never have to stay up LATE again as you have already settled it.

Depending on how tired I am, my body might not respond to alarm clocks. My roommate at this summer program told me she saw me wake up and turn off three different alarm clocks and go right back to bed. I always just thought my alarm clocks were broken, or I had forgotten to turn them on the previous night.

I really don't like caffeine, but if they'll work... I didn't google anything bad with caffeine pills/coffee (health-wise) as long as they weren't taken on a regular basis for athletes and the like.

One sleeping pattern that worked for me was if I get home around 5, sleep right after I get home. Chances are I'll wake up around 10-12. Then I'll have until morning to do stuff. However, lately I've formed a study group and don't get home until ~11. It's not a good idea to sleep at 11 if later studying is planned. lol.

Hahah, baller4lyfe... I didn't see your post before I clicked submit.

I really really wish I could do that. I've tried. I'll continue trying, but let's just say I'm planning ahead. hahah.

yeah...if I get 7+ hours of sleep I'm usually falling asleep during classes.

I try to make up sleep on the weekends, which seems to help a little bit. To stay awake during the night, I make sure I never do hw on my bed and that I'm sitting up rather than lying across the floor or something. I drink a cup of tea around 11:30 and then a glass of juice or soda (yeah... I know, soda's really bad for you) sometime during the night - usually around 1 or 2 am. That usually keeps me going. Eating a snack might work too.
