How do you guys study with noise?

So here's the thing:

I'm a person that finds it very hard (for some reason) to study with background noises going on. However, I have a special needs sibling. Long story short, my sibling vocalizes loudly a lot and until now, to mask out the sound, I have been using a fan to block out the noise while I study only.
(I am okay with it when I'm not studying, but it's very distracting when I study...)

So, my question is, does white noise/fan noise help or hurt with studying? If not, how would you guys recommend I block out noise while I study?

Do you guys have to block out outside noises when you study? If so, how do you do it?

The first thing I thought about when reading this was Kevin French’s “Bling-blonging” from Mission Hill. (No? Nobody else watches cult late night cartoons from the early 2000’s?)

I also have a hard time studying or reading with background noise. I will either try to isolate myself even more (closing the door tighter, putting in headphones with nothing playing) or possibly leaving. (I’ve gone and sat outside to read before). I may put on some classical or instrumental music, but nothing too anthemic.

If I try to study, or do any written work for that matter, without some sort of background noise, I go ballistic. Like, I cannot focus of there isn’t something else going on around me. I’ll have headphones in with some quiet music or I study when my brothers are around playing video games with their little game noises.

Same with sleep. I usually have a fan going or something.

Ooh but what really irks me is when I hear a uniform sound. Like a ticking clock, or a consistent water droplet. I can’t. It makes me go insane. Literally cannot.

^ This is exactly what I am.

I think you should maybe have a TV show playing in the background - not one that you’re interested in - but one that’s really boring. When I study, I study in my living room, with the home shopping channel on. The sound of the guy talking about non-stick frying pans, at least to me, is more conducive to my studying than absolute silence. As other posters have said, I cannot study in total silence.

I have a Beethoven station on pandora that I turn on and put my headphones in when my family is being loud

Earplugs are amazing. They block out all the sounds.
I have the same problem as you. If I can’t block out the noise I’d just have to go and find a quieter place nearby. You might wanna consider going to a library? Or play classical music - they help with concentrating (from what I heard)

I have a grandma who watches insanely loud TV, so I’ve learned how to listen to music with headphones while studying. That might help, especially if it’s in a language you don’t understand because then you don’t focus on the words

Noise canceling headphones may be downside but they might be worth it for you.
