How do you know if you have ADHD?

I feel like I have a short attention span sometimes and occasionally, I have to ask someone to repeat something they just said because I was not paying attention.

Is this something you can find out by yourself without the help of a professional?

The short answer is no, you can’t figure this out on your own. If you google the adult ADHD screening list, though, there is a group of questions that can give you an idea if you have a problem, or not. ADDitude or any ADHD group will have it somewhere. There’s a real difference between being forgetful or distracted and having ADHD.

Diagnosis is through a bunch of neuropsych tests (to see what your working memory is,etc…not blood tests) given by a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist who has experience with ADHD. My son’s were covered by insurance, they often are. He had a consult appointment, and then 2 3hr testing appointments, and then another appointment where they went over the results.
