How do you know if you're "going out" with someone?

This question involves one of those unwritten social rules that people just "get" ...the kind of "rule" influenced by a "theory of mind" (if you've ever heard of the term), which I either don't possess or do but it's defective. So anyway, be nice...

You say "Will you go out with me?"

We use that term so loosely though. I've asked that and been asked so many times by non-romantic friends, etc.

Is this serious?

Umm yeah, I just got back from somewhere, and my other friend asked how my "date" went, and I didn't know what to say because it just dawned on me that perhaps our going out could be interpreted as a date. I would love to think of it that way though.

if it was a date, I'd say that you're "seeing them." I feel like its up to one's own interpretation of who you're seeing.

Going out, on the other hand, involves confirmation with the other person in some form. Moreover, I wouldn't refer to someone as my girlfriend until we were "officially" going out.

wow...and there was time when people actually talked about something worth time.

you're one to talk

are you serious SV? since all your threads are worth so much time...

Well, did you ask her/him for a follow-up date? If it's only been one date, you're not officially dating each other yet. You need at least 2 consecutive dates (with the second one showing interest from both sides at the end) to get at the start of "going out" with someone.

Wait....are you confused as to whether or not going out on one date means that you can say you're dating that person, or seeing that person, or whatever you want to call it, OR are you confused as to whether or not the activity in question was actually a date to begin with? Because you don't want to be going around telling people you're dating Sue, when Sue thinks that she spent the evening hanging out with a platonic friend.

I have a story about this. I was talking to this girl and we were talking about how like you go out with them and then you "go out" with them.

It ended with her saying to ask someone out as a friend, say "Do you want to go out to ..."
To ask someone out on a date say, "Do you want to go out to ... WITH ME?"

I dont know how accurate this was but it was fun to joke around after she said it.

''Wait....are you confused as to whether or not going out on one date means that you can say you're dating that person, or seeing that person, or whatever you want to call it, OR are you confused as to whether or not the activity in question was actually a date to begin with? Because you don't want to be going around telling people you're dating Sue, when Sue thinks that she spent the evening hanging out with a platonic friend.''

so a name tells a lot about the person...like for example Ashley you can guess would be hott, good looking, *****y but oh well her hottness would make up for it.... but Sue....ugly, ew, and someone who stays shut in her room reading jane austen all day so who cares if she thinks that she spent the evening hanging out with a platonic friend

Hahaha, thanks for the laugh. However, I think Ashley is moderately attractive at best.

If your facebook says "in a relationship." :)

or "It's Complicated"? My favorite :)

Or if you simultaneously de-list yourselves as single on facebook. Sneaky devils.

People still notice, even if it's not in their news feed. Or are my friends just really good at stalking?

When you start doing seemingly mundane things together like shop for groceries.
