Here are just a few questions i was wondering about, I'm in highschool and currently researching colleges before i start applying...

How do you like Oberlin?
What is the best/ worst part about going there?
What programs are you involved in or recommend?
What kinds of things are there to do our the city and campus?
How are the professors and class environments?

I'll try and answer the questions as in depth as possible since I know insider info is pretty important to the whole college applying process.

How do you like Oberlin?
I love it!

What is the best/ worst part about going there?
Best - there is so much. I really love the general atmosphere of the school and people are very friendly. I enjoy getting to hear so many concerts and having the conservatory resources. Also, there is a general progressive attitude. Worst - Sometimes I get a bit bored of the nightlife because there's not really anything offered by the town. There's always stuff happening on campus but sometimes I wish I could get off campus for things. (disclaimer - I'm from a city)

What programs are you involved in or recommend?
Exco courses are pretty awesome because you can get credit for all sorts of classes from knitting to tango dancing to steel drums. I would say that Oberlin is a good place to learn an instrument if you haven't done it before - secondary lessons are cheap, or if you already play something and audition for credit, free! There are lots of groups on campus, you just have to do what suits you and I would recommend finding a club to get involved with. Your first semester, I would say don't stress yourself out too much, but go to several meetings you're interested in and figure out which one or two you like the most. I like the people in some groups better and feel more included, so do some searching. If you are wondering if there is a particular club for an interest you have feel free to ask.

What kinds of things are there to do our the city and campus?
The town of Oberlin is really small. For day to day living, it has everything you need though - like food, toiletries, and there are some other stores, some are cool like vintage clothing and jewelry, besides a few restaurants. There's also a movie theater that shows one movie a week. So, for entertainment the town doesn't offer a whole lot. However, there are some ways to get involved with the town like tutoring in local schools which is a good thing. The campus, on the other hand, has sooo much. Lots of concerts, lots of clubs, lots of resources. There is a cafe place that often has bands or singer/songwriter types and then a dance club. There is a lot to do and things to choose from so often you can't do everything you want to do - though as I said, occassionally I wish there were more options.

How are the professors and class environments?
I'd say that they are pretty great. I have had good experiences with professors so far and I'm sure there are some bad ones out there but there are also wonderful ones! They're also usually available for questions. I'm also really pleased with my classes. They are smaller for the most part and taught by professors, not TAs. Many students want to be active participants in class, so there's often interaction and discussion.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

I read a review of Oberlin and it seemed like the students were a little "far out" or "Hippie-like" and that the atmosphere was similar to Bard or Weslyan. Is this true?

renfield-
I have not visited Bard or Wesleyan, so I can't comment on the similarity of student bodies. However, I do know many Bard students who looked at Oberlin, and many Obies who looked at Wesleyan. So it seems that there is some commonality between the 3 schools. There are some students who would be "far out" or "Hippie-like". But there are also students who aren't.

Hello! i would just like to know what made you choose Oberlin? im deciding whether i should ED 2 to Wesleyan or Oberlin, and am not sure which one to ED to. I think that both are fantastic schools! I am really interested in Studio Arts, Art History, English, Philosophy and film. Also, how far is it to fly from new york city to cleveland ? Thanks!
