How do you make a paragraph in your essay?

On the common app, it seems very difficult to format your essay. How do you add a new paragraph. It keeps deleting the formatting.

It was giving me such a headache too, and I couldn’t figure it out until I found this in the help section: “You can bold, underline, and italicize your words in the text box and can include one paragraph break only. Excessive spaces and breaks will automatically be removed when you click continue.”

I know, I saw that, but there is no option for that one paragraph break. Whatever, I just pressed enter for my paragraphs.

only one paragraph break? what the heck kind of rules are these lol

This is bs

Common app was always like this. you have to use space and enter and keep checking Print Preview

^actually, no it wasn’t. Before you wrote your essay in a word doc and uploaded it. So much easier than this situation. I don’t get the one paragraph break at all. When my S told me that I thought he was pulling my leg. How do you write a 650 word essay with only 2 paragraphs?

I know. So much for being creative.

This is a joke.

Yes, like RenaissanceMom said, the common app was considerably different before. I used it just last term and was able to upload my personal statement from a file and it maintained all the formatting.

Limiting a roughly 500 word essay to 2 paragraphs either seems like a big oversight or an oddly forced exercise in creative problem solving.

I haven’t had a problem with making my essay multiple paragraphs. You don’t get 1 paragraph break total…there’s just no way to make spaces more than 1 line between paragraphs. If that makes sense at all. Your paragraphs are going to be all squished together, but they will technically be separated.
