I really want to create a personal website to organize my writings/upload pictures/etc, but I am not familiar with HTML. I think my university offers each student webspace, but I am not sure how to get started. Does anyone know of a good website/program to do this? Any general advice would also be greatly appreciated!!

1st page via Google search:

http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/

<----still wishes he should've invested in Google when it was IPO sigh

anyways, good luck =]

I used this site a little when I was learning HTML:
https://www.mainfunction.com/DotNetInAction/Technologies/display.aspx?ID=2505&TypeID=12

It's pretty basic, but useful.

I used angelfire (www.angelfire.com) ... they not only give you the space but also lots of templates which you can just "fill in"

the sucky part is that they give you like ZERO bandwith ... but unless your site will be getting tons of visitors, it's not a problem.

if you do something like angelfire, then you need to know basically nothing, but even if you're doing your own scripting, with some basic kknowledge of html, css, you can make a decent website

If you decided to pick up a bit of html, I recommend checking out html goodies. When I was 12, I was really into web design as a hobby, and I would refer to that site often.

it's one of those things where it takes a few days to get comfortable, but it's quite easy once you get the hang of it

http://www.htmldog.com is pretty good.

I use DreamWeaver, but that might be a bit more than you need. It costs about $400, but you can use it for 30 days free to build you website. Then just get rid of it. You can download it from www.macromedia.com

I can make your site for a pretty cheap price. PM me if interested.

Maybe you should start a blog.
Blogger is free, easy to use, and quite powerful.
WordPress is awesome if you have your own webspace and know a bit about web site creation.

thanks for the great responses
