How do you nicely reject a job offer?

I'm a college student who really needs some money. Recently, I got a $6.50/hr job offer at my school's library.

I was just about to start working there when this person from another job that pays $8/hr called me to offer me a position. Because I'm work study and totally broke, I need to make as much money as possible.

So, how do I tell the $6.50/hr people that I can't work there anymore without being undiplomatic? They were expecting and excited to see me start working this week.

It's not you, it's me--I need the money.

You just tell them the truth - nicely.

Ouch $8? I know this is offtopic but 4 months ago I started my first job ever at $7 now I am landing jobs with double digits.

It seems like you explained it pretty well here. I found a job that pays more and right now I really need that extra money. Thank you for the opportunity.

I agree.

Tell them the truth, keeping in mind that you want to do your best to maintain a good relationship with the staff in the library in case you ever have to come back pleading for a job!

Don't feel too bad about it, though; people turn down job offers all the time!

I was offered a $5.25 an hour job at Macy's for "fluffing." I'm not going to fold clothes for $5 dollars are you kidding? Wow, two years of college and a great G.P.A. lands me this job heh?

Something along these lines.

Dear so and so:

Thank you for the opportunity. However, due to some personal circumstances, I must respectfully decline.

Again, thank you for the opportunity.

Sincerely, your name

I agree to work here......NOT!

That is amazing, heh.

I'm with the others. Tell them the truth. And you're helping out the community by doing so; if they lose a few people they're trying to hire to places that pay more, then they'll either decide to raise their pay or lower their standards. Assuming they raise the pay, then some fellow student you'll never know or meet will have you to thank in part ...
