How do you "pick" LSP courses?

I'm enrolling in LSP, and I originally applied for CAS. I've heard that the LSP courses are very restricting, but don't LSP students get SOME choice about what to study? Like, for example, LSP students are required to study the "Great Books." So, do they get a list of say, 10 classes, and then pick 1 of the "Great Books" they want to learn about? They aren't completely and totally assigned every single one of their classes, right? I'd really like to hear some insight from an LSP student!

I’m pretty sure you’re allowed to choose some of your classes. For example, with the science courses you can choose between the History of the Universe, Environmental Studies, or Life Science.

No offense, but you can easily google “NYU LSP” to go to the site and see all the requirements: [Program Requirements](http://ls.nyu.edu/object/totalrequirements09)

Freshmen year, 6/8 classes are assigned; Writing I and II, Cultural Foundations I and II and Social Foundations I and II. You get to pick 2 electives freshmen year (one each semester). Sophomore year there are only like 2-3 requirements so you pick most of your own classes. The electives don’t have to be in LSP; you can pick from CAS, Tisch, Steinhardt, etc.

Cloudly is right, there are several science classes to choose from (you can take one science in lsp then do MAP science in CAS) and several World Culture classes (East asian, middle eastern, African, South American, South Asian, etc…)

Thanks for the replies! They were really helpful.

Alix, I know you can Google it. I’ve been on the LSP website tons of times and I’ve seen that page, but it still seems really ambiguous to me. I basically wanted to be able to see an actual list of classes, which I was told I can’t do until I can start registering for classes online in a few weeks. Thanks for your clarification, though.

Actually, you can see exactly which LSP courses are being offered for fall semester by going to the NYU homepage and selecting “Registrar” from the Quick Links pull down menu. Next select, in order, Course Search; Fall 2010; Undergraduate, Liberal Studies Program; All Subject Areas; and then click Get Course Listings. This should bring up a list of all the courses and sections being offered in LSP for fall semester. Don’t worry that a lot of the sections say “closed”. They aren’t really closed, they are being held in reserve for Freshman Orientation. If you click on the course number, like T04-2001 (East Asian Cultures), you will usually get a brief description of the course. If the instructor has taught the course before, you can also sometimes find the previous syllabus online by Googling the instructor’s name + NYU, or some variation thereof.

Thanks, CASmom!! That’s exactly what I was looking for! :)

I’m happy I could help. By the way, the same process holds true for checking the fall class/section line-ups for the other schools as well. Counterintuitively, however, you can’t actually register using the Registrar link. All registration is done through ALBERT, and only after you have been cleared to register, by your advisor, at summer orientation. Nevertheless, the Registrar link is a great way to “window-shop” and try to work out a set of potential schedules that work for you. It will help you be better prepared/more knowledgeable when you meet with your advisor.
